Over the weekend I totally fell in love with Widowspeak’s version of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon.  They somehow made a delicate song even more delicate.  Put on headphones before you hit play!  Enjoy.

Quickdraw: Bully, The Mynabirds, Weaves, Grooms, Widowspeak

August 8, 2017

Here’s a few songs that were released while SOTO was napping.  Enjoy.

Bully – Feel The Same

Bully are now on Sub Pop and their new album, Losing, will be out on October 20.  This quickie of a first single is a real gem, and I can’t wait to hear more off of the LP.  Catch the band at Emo’s on December 8.

The Mynabirds – Shouting At The Dark

I think The Mynabirds have themselves a legit hit here.  Turn it up.  Their new album, Be Here Now, is due August 25 via Saddle Creek.

Weaves – #53

I saw Weaves at SXSW earlier this year, and since then I’ve been anxious for new music.  Well, it’s here, and it’s good.  The band will release their sophomore effort, Wide Open, on October 6 via Kanine.

Grooms – Turn Your Body

Grooms have readied a new album, Exit Index, and it’ll be released on October 20 via Western Vinyl.  The lead single is a lot less noisy than their usual stuff, but I dig it.

Widowspeak – When I Tried

Here’s one for your headphones, it’s the latest single off of Widowspeak’s upcoming album, Expect The Best, which is due out August 25 via Captured Tracks. The band will play Sidewinder on October 3.

September 17, 2015

While tooling around this morning I came across Widowspeak covering Third Eye Blind’s How’s It Going To Be, and it just completely hit the right spot.  Back in my teen days I blasted TEB’s self titled debut all the time, and that song in particular was my favorite (well, next to Semi-Charmed Life, of course).  Widowspeak’s version is sparse and sad, but so is the song lyrically, so it works really well.  Enjoy.

:Widowspeak – How’s It Going To Be (Third Eye Blind Cover):

The band currently have a full length, All Yours, out now on Captured Tracks.  No word yet on when the Two Covers 7″ will be released. See them at Lambert’s on October 17.

Quickdraw: EL VY, Widowspeak, Low, jj, Caspian

August 6, 2015

Music!  Enjoy.

:EL VY – Return to the Moon (Political Song for Didi Bloome to Sing, with Crescendo):  EL VY is – and I’m quoting the press release here – “not a replacement or a side project, but a glimpse into an alternate musical universe” from Matt Berninger (The National) and Brent Knopf (Ramona Falls/Menomena).  OK?  Either way, those two are favorites of mine and this song is quite easy on the ears, so I’m in for more.  Return To The Moon is due out October 30 via 4AD.

:Widowspeak – Dead Love (So Still):  Where is everyone in regards to the upcoming Widowspeak album?  I feel like there hasn’t been much chatter about it.  This is another stellar single off of the LP (here’s another).  All Yours is due out September 4 via Captured Tracks.

:Low – What Part Of Me:  This is a really pretty new single from Low.  Like everyone else, my level of love for the band is at its highest when they’re crawling along and slinging darkness around, but this song is just too inviting to not appreciate.  Ones And Sixes is due out September 11 via Sub Pop.

:jj – Fuck It:  jj have seemingly reached a point where they have no more fucks to give, and I’m all about it.  This attitude-laced effort is rad and serves as a great companion piece to their other sassy single, Truce.  The Death EP is due out June 12.

:Caspian – Darkfield:  Things have been a little slow on the post rock front in 2015, so big ups to Caspian for providing fans of the genre something to lean on.  As always with anything instrumental, you should slap on some headphones before you hit play.  Dust And Disquiet is due out September 25 via Big Scary Monsters.

Quickdraw: Titus Andronicus, Widowspeak, Lower Dens, Mas Ysa, Chelsea Wolfe

June 11, 2015

Music!  Enjoy.

:Titus Andronicus – Fatal Flaw:  Here’s another raucous good time from the one and only Titus Andronicus.  If this track doesn’t make you want to go wild, you should seek help immediately.  The Most Lamentable Tragedy is due out July 28 via Merge.  See them on September 20 at Red 7.

:Widowspeak – Girls:  This new Widowspeak single is one of the more pleasant things I’ve heard in 2015.  I love Molly Hamilton’s inviting vocal work and the meandering arrangement is delightful.  All Yours is due out September 4 via Captured Tracks.

:Lower Dens  – Maneater (Hall & Oates Cover):  For fun (I assume), Lower Dens performed this Hall & Oates cover live during a recent Sirius XMU session.  The original will always be my favorite version, but I definitely dig the moody twist that’s been applied here.

:Mas Ysa – Gun (Featuring Nicole Miglis):  This powerful duet with Nicole Miglis (of Hundred Waters) is the latest and greatest effort from Thomas Arsenault (aka Mas Ysa).  I’m impatiently waiting for the day I can take his debut album and devour it with a good pair of headphones.  Seraph is due out July 24 via Downtown Records.  See him July 17 at Red 7.

:Chelsea Wolfe – Carrion Flowers:  Unsurprisingly, I’m all about this crunchy, haunting wall of sound from Chelsea Wolfe.  There’s something about her weirdness that always pulls me in.  Abyss is due out August 7 via Sargent House.  See her September 19 at the Mohawk.

Quickdraw: Swearin, Haim, Popstrangers, Crystal Antlers, Widowspeak

October 7, 2013

Today’s music loves your shoes.  Enjoy.

:Swearin – Dust In The Gold Sack:  There will soon come a time where I’ll be able to put on the Speedy Ortiz and Swearin albums back to back, and it’s going to be glorious in the way that only 90s-enthused indie rock can be.  The band will release Surfing Strange on November 4 via Salinas.  Catch them at the Mohawk on December 10.

:Haim – Edge:  Here’s a technically new one from Haim that was produced by George Lewis Jr. (aka Twin Shadow).  It sounds like Haim doing a Twin Shadow track, which I think is pretty great.  You can get Days Are Gone now via Columbia, but if you want this track with it you’ll have to pick up the deluxe UK iTunes edition of the album.  The band’s next show in Austin is this weekend during round #2 of ACL.

:Popstrangers – Rats In The Palm Trees:  I haven’t listened to the album that Popstrangers put out earlier this year, but this new single makes me want to.  They make really pleasant guitar-driven pop music.  Expect to be able to grab the Rats In The Palm Trees 7″ on November 5 via Carpark.

:Crystal Antlers – Licorice Pizza:  This track is a quick burst of punk fun, and I dig it.  If only the title didn’t totally gross me out, though.  Crystal Antlers are all set to put out Nothing Is Real on October 15 via Innovative Leisure.  You’ll be able to see them on October 19 at the Mohawk.

:Widowspeak – Calico:  I had two chances to see Widowspeak this weekend, and I missed out on both of them.  This well crafted number makes me regret that.   The Swamps EP will be made available to the world on October 29 via Captured Tracks.  See them play this weekend at ACL.

Quickdraw: Of Montreal, Dinosaur Jr, Porcelain Raft, Widowspeak, Tree

July 16, 2013

Today’s music wants to live its life like it’s alive.  Enjoy.

:Of Montreal – Fugitive Air:  Over the years Kevin Barnes has done some rather adventurous stuff with Of Montreal’s sound, so it’s nice to see him scale things back a bit.  I really like this jangly piece of garage rock.  Lousy With Sylvianbriar is due out October 8 via Polyvinyl.

:Dinosaur Jr. – The Only Other Way:  Not much is as impressive as Dinosaur Jr’s streak of great songs over these last few years.  This one is the result of a Skullcandy promotion where the band teamed up with the company to release a special headphones package.  I believe it’s out today.

:Porcelain Raft – The Way Out:  It would appear as though Porcelain Raft have gotten even better at crafting sprawling arrangements.  The new album is going to be great if it’s as big and confident as this track.  Permanent Signal is due out August 20 via Secretly Canadian.

:Widowspeak – True Believer:  The album that Widowspeak put out earlier this year is certainly a good one, but I actually think this dreamy number trumps it.  Can’t wait to hear the rest of their new effort.  The Swamps EP is due out October 29 via Captured Tracks.

:Tree – Demons (Featuring Beat Culture And Lena Kuhn):  There’s so much 90s-enthused music out there these days, I guess it makes sense that someone would eventually dip into the realm of trip hop.  Glad it went well.  Tree will release the Demons EP on August 13 via Apollo Records.

Quickdraw: Generationals, Jens Lekman, Widowspeak, Guards, Hands

January 10, 2013

Today’s music was crafted by the elves.  Enjoy.

:Generationals – Spinoza:  If I made a quick list of the “best news” that this week has delivered, Generationals announcing a new album would be somewhere near the top.  They’re such a fantastic pop act, which you will see for yourself via this hooky gem.  Heza is due on April 2 through the always lovely Polyvinyl Records.

:Jens Lekman – Olivia And Maddy:  Like all things from Jens, this is an absolute charmer.  Yes, that means you’re pretty much guaranteed to feel the need to smile whenever you decide to hit play.  Sorry.  The track is just a one-off single, so grab it while you can.

:Widowspeak – Thick As Thieves:  This band keeps rolling out singles from their upcoming album, and I keep getting more anxious for its release.  Molly Hamilton has the sort of voice that grabs my attention and just won’t let go.  Captured Tracks will release Almanac on January 22.

:Guards – Ready To Go:  I really dig this track.  It’s very warm and inviting, and I just can’t get enough of the moments where it soars.  In Guards We Trust is going to be a hell of an effort if it has anything else on it that’s as good as this.  The album is due out February 5 via Black Bell.

:Hands – Trouble:  Here’s a band that just signed with Kill Rock Stars this week.  This first single is a fun, upbeat number, and I’m certainly curious to see what else they have to offer.  Synesthesia is expected to be released on April 30.

Widowspeak aren’t a band I’ve ever paid a ton of attention to, and that will now stop.  Their new single is stellar!  Consider me more than a little excited to check out their upcoming sophomore effort, Almanac, which is due out January 22 via Captured Tracks.  Enjoy.

:Widowspeak – Ballad Of The Golden Hour:  The work done here reminds me a lot of the great Land Of Talk – it’s all soft vocal work laid over a moody arrangement.  I love it, and you will too.
