Quickdraw: Terry Malts, The White Octave, Curtin, Whirr, Buke And Gase

September 2, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Terry Malts – Don’t:  Nothing puts a smile on my face quicker than a new fuzzed out pop tune from the great Terry Malts.  Naturally, I can’t wait to check out their upcoming EP.  Look for the Insides EP to be released on September 23 via Slumberland.

:The White Octave – Looking Past Sky:  Despite being a big Criteria fan, I don’t think I knew that frontman Stephen Pedersen once had a band called The White Octave.  I’ll have to make sure to become acquainted with them when the remastered version of 2000′s Style No. 6312 arrives on September 16 via Broken Circles.

:Curtin – I’m A Ghost:  Formerly of Country Mice, Jason Rueger and Austin Nelson now operate as Curtin.  This is a wonderfully moody, atmospheric track that slowly builds into a big climax.  Headphones are definitely recommended.  The band will release One For The Doghearted on September 30.

:Whirr – Lines:  It’s probably time to go ahead and declare that the upcoming Whirr album will end up being the year’s best shoegaze effort.  So far all of the singles have been pretty great.  Sway will be released on September 23 via Graveface.  See the band at Red 7 this Saturday.

:Buke And Gase – Seam Esteem:  Here’s a song that came from Buke And Gase’s recent month-long stretch of improv sessions that were meant to “expand their options and raise what they had previously perceived to be their glass ceiling.”  I think it sounds pretty neat.  Not sure when they’ll deliver a new album, but I assume one is on the way.

Quickdraw: Roses, Literature, Half Japanese, Perfume Genius, Whirr

July 17, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Roses – It’s Over:  Abe Vigoda is something that is no more, but at least you can still get music from one of their former members, Juan Velazquez, who is the main brain in Roses.  I’m really liking the slightly new wave, but mostly 90s pop vibe that this track is packing.  The Dreamlover EP is due out August 5 via Group Tightener.

:Literature – The English Softhearts:  Formerly of Austin, Literature now reside in Philadelphia and are the latest addition to the just-about-perfect Slumberland roster.  Good for them!  This is one pretty pop tune.  Look for Chorus to be set free on August 19.

:Half Japanese – In Its Pull:  I’m not sure why, but many years ago I went through a phase where I would listen to Half Japanese’s Put Some Sugar On It over and over.  I can’t say I feel as obsessive about this track, but it’s still a more than solid slab of indie rock.  The band will release Overjoyed on September 2 via Joyful Noise.

:Perfume Genius – Queen:  If Perfume Genius’ upcoming LP isn’t on your list of things that you can’t wait for, then expect this impeccable song to make you want to put it there.  By the way, I highly recommend that you slap on some nice headphones before hitting play.  Too Bright is due out September 22 via Matador.

:Whirr – Mumble:  This could just be me, but I sort of love the meta-ness of a shoegaze band having a song called Mumble.  What a perfect match.  Whirr will release Sway on September 23 via Graveface.  See the band at Holy Mountain on September 6.

Quickdraw: Obits, Twin Peaks, Whirr, Static Jacks, Joseph Childress

July 8, 2013

Today’s music could use one more day off.  Enjoy.

:Obits – Taste The Diff:  This snarling punk track is exactly what all of our summers needed.  Turn it way up, friends.  Obits will put out a new full length, Bed & Bugs, on September 10 through the almighty Sub Pop.

:Twin Peaks – Irene:  While I think Twin Peaks is an odd name for a pop act (I can’t help but think of the breastaurant), I do like their music.  This is one glimmering effort.  The band will put out Sunken tomorrow on Autumn Tone Records.

:Whirr – Swoon:  There’s a whole lot going on in this massive song from Whirr, and I like all of it.  A lot.  I can’t wait to see them live, as I imagine it’s a thunderous time.   Around is due out on Graceface Records tomorrow.  If you’re in Austin, the band will play the Mohawk on August 3.

:Static Jacks – I’ll Come Back:  Until this pop number came along, I wasn’t at all familiar with the Static Jacks.  Now I just need to get on with seeing if the rest of their stuff is this crazy catchy.  In Blue Out is due October 1 via Old Friends Records.

:Joseph Childress – Whispering Tide:  There was a day over the holiday break where I was just sort of obsessed with this song.  Joseph Childress has a great voice, and I pretty much get lost in it.  The Rebirths is due August 20 via Empty Cellar Records.
