Quickdraw: The Men, The Orwells, Very Fresh, The Mary Onettes, STRFKR

Music!  Enjoy.

:The Men – Crime:  I wasn’t all that into the first single (it’s called Lion) off of The Men’s upcoming LP, but this one is pretty great.  Makes me want to jam garage rock tunes all day.  Devil Music is due out on November 11 via Bandcamp.

:The Orwells – Buddy:  It’s already been two years since The Orwells released Disgraceland.  That’s weird to me.  Anyhow, this little quickie is catchy.  A new album from the band is expected in early 2017.

:Very Fresh – Hat Tree:  1) Very Fresh main brain Cindy Lou Gooden and Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis are in an all-girl Pavement cover band called Babement. What!  I need to see that.  2) I dig the way this song drips with sincerity.  Hey, It’s Me! is due out November 4 via New Professor Music/Inflated Records.

:The Mary Onettes – Juna:  Here’s the latest well crafted pop gem from The Mary Onettes.  Be sure to put on headphones so that all of its pretty sounds can fill your head.  The Juna single is available now via Bandcamp.

:STRFKR – Satellite:  STRFKR’s upcoming album wasn’t really on my anticipated list, but I believe this song just put it there.  It’s such a comfy jam.  Being No One, Going No Where is due out November 4 via Polyvinyl.

Top 50 Songs Of 2013: Part 3

December 4, 2013

We’re now firmly in the mid-section of this list.  I hope that so far you’ve been digging it and have maybe found some new stuff.  Let me know if you have any guesses on what will be in the top spot!  Enjoy.

30)  :Action Bronson – The Rockers (Featuring Wiz Khalifa):  Out of the ton of good stuff that Action Bronson released in 2013, this track is my favorite.  He sounds great in it, and I especially dig the Wiz Khalifa verse.  From the SAAAB Stories EP.

29)  :Phantogram – Celebrating Nothing:  At some point in 2014 I’m going to finally get a new Phantogram album.  Until then, I’ll just let this gem swirl around in my head.  From their self titled EP.

28)  :Divine Fits – Ain’t That The Way:  If you ask me, this is the best Spoon cover that Divine Fits have ever done.  Ha!  Seriously though, it’s a pretty great pop song.  From the Ain’t That The Way/Chained To Love digital single.

27)  :M.I.A. – Y.A.L.A.:  Another year, another great single from M.I.A.  She may be a bit unhinged, but her work is consistently interesting and worth your time.  From Matangi.

26)  :Joanna Gruesome – Sugarcrush:  This infectious piece of noise pop has been a favorite of mine for months.  Also, as a Joanna Newsom fan, I’m admittedly a sucker for the name Joanna Gruesome.  From Weird Sister.

25)  :The Orwells – Other Voices:  While the hard working, fresh out of high school dudes in the Orwells make me feel lazy and old, I can’t help but dig their music.  This rock tune is as catchy as it gets.  From the Other Voices EP.

24)  :Son Lux – Lost It To Trying:  This song is definitely Sigur Ros-light, but I think that actually makes me like it more.  Toss on headphones or just crank your stereo, either approach works well with Son Lux.  From Lanterns.

23)  :The Men – The Seeds (Acoustic Version):  The original version of this track is rather nice, but I think the acoustic take really makes for something special.  It’s definitely my favorite song by the Men.  From the Campfire Songs EP.

22)  :Youth Lagoon – Dropla:  Throughout the year this Youth Lagoon song was one of my go-tos for when I just wanted to kick back and listen to something.  It has such a stellar, well layered arrangement.  From Wondrous Bughouse.

21)  :Lightning Dust – Loaded Gun:  I ended up not loving Lightning Dust’s new synth-enthused sound as much as I thought I would, but I do think this particular song is rad.  Be sure to jam it.  From Fantasy.

Quickdraw: American Sharks, The Orwells, FIDLAR, Crystal Antlers, Chelsea Wolfe

July 25, 2013

Today’s music doesn’t believe in curfews.  Enjoy.

:American Sharks – XVI:  Much of my 2013 has seen buzz for Austin’s American Sharks, and this power kick to the face of a song makes it easy to understand why.  I can’t wait to see them on Friday when they open for the Sword at Red 7.  The band will release their self titled debut in September via The End Records.

:The Orwells – Who Needs You:  There’s plenty to like about this year’s ACL lineup, but The Orwells are one band in particular that I’m actually anxious to see.  I know “infectious” is a word that’s super over-used these days, but it’s pretty much the best way to describe these guys.  The Who Needs You EP, which is their second release of 2013, is due September 10 via East End/Canvasback.

:FIDLAR – Awkward:  I actually posted this song last year, but FIDLAR have resurrected it for a tour-only split 7″ with The Orwells.  The guest spot from Kate Nash is gone, and it’s sporting a cleaner sound.  I think I like it more than the original.  The band is also playing ACL.

:Crystal Antlers – Rattlesnake:  I’ve long appreciated Crystal Antlers, but this song is so good that now I’m wondering if I should have been giving them even more attention.  Talk about inspired stuff.  The will release the Rattlesnake single on September 24 via Innovative Leisure.  A full length is expected at some point.

:Chelsea Wolfe – We Hit A Wall:  This is a really intense track.  I dig it, and I won’t be surprised if I end up spending a good chunk of time with Chelsea’s upcoming LP.  Pain Is Beauty is due out September 3 via Sargent House.  She will play the Mohawk on September 6.

Quickdraw: Club 8, The Orwells, Tim And Adam, The Mantles, MS MR

May 13, 2013

Today’s music was forged in the fires of Mount Doom.  Enjoy.

:Club 8 – I’m Not Gonna Grow Old:  For those of you who have spent the first five months of 2013 impatiently waiting for someone to deliver a stunning disco-enthused pop song, expect this Club 8 effort to make your day.  Their new LP is titled Above The City, and it’s due out May 21 via Labrador.

:The Orwells – Other Voices:  Apparently for their upcoming EP, this up and coming act wrangled TV On The Radio’s David Sitek as a producer.  Nicely done.  As for this song, it’s loud and entertaining, and I really like it.  The band will put out the Other Voices EP on June 25 via East End/Canvasback.

:Tim And Adam – So Much More:  Tim from the Postmarks and Adam from Whirlaway, I Am Stereo, and Hello Human are the pair that lead this new act.  Their sound is a nice mix of early 2000s indie and electro pop.  Tim And Adam’s self titled debut is currently available.

:The Mantles – Hello:  This is one of those singles that makes me shift from curious to excited about an upcoming album.  In other words, let’s hurry up and get Long Enough To Leave in my hands.  The LP is expected out on June 18 via Slumberland.

:MS MR – Hurricane (Chvrches Remix):  I think the original version of this is perfect, but this Chrvches remix is too entertaining to not like.  By the way, the chorus will most certainly make you want to instantly host a dance party wherever you are.  MS MR will release Secondhand Rapture tomorrow Creep City Records.
