Quickdraw: Heartless Bastards, Dog Party, It Looks Sad, Son Lux, The Sandwitches

Music!  Enjoy.

:Heartless Bastards – Black Cloud:  I very much appreciate how consistently good Heartless Bastards have been over the years.  It’s an impressive feat.  Anyhow, this latest single of theirs has a bounce to it that I really like.  Restless Ones is due out June 16 via Partisan.  See them at the Mohawk on November 21.

:Dog Party – Sapphires:  Here’s a new ripper from the duo known as Dog Party.  I get the feeling that their new album is going to be one of those that’ll be great to blast in the car.  Vol. 4 is due out June 16 via Burger Records/Asian-Man Records.

:It Looks Sad – Creature:  While I don’t necessarily know how to feel about any band that willingly calls themselves It Looks Sad, I do like this track.  It’s a shimmery anthemic number that I can’t get out of my head.  The Kaiju digital single is due out June 19 via Tiny Engines.

:Son Lux – You Don’t Know Me:  This new one from Son Lux is aggressive and big, and I think you’re going to love it.  We’ll be in for a treat if all of their upcoming LP is this good.  Bones is due out June 23 via Glassnote.

:The Sandwitches – Miggy:  I haven’t really cared much for the other singles that have been released in anticipation of The Sandwitches’ new album, but this one works for me.  I love the vocals and the overall retro-feel of the song.  Our Toast is due out June 9 via Empty Cellars Records.

Quickdraw: Wye Oak, Tobacco, Son Lux, Pattern Is Movement, Pure X

March 20, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Wye Oak – Glory:  I’d be a lair if I said I didn’t scoff a bit when I heard about Wye Oak being behind a synth-heavy jam, but here the song is in all of its awesomeness.  I was so wrong to doubt them.  Anyway, their upcoming album is going to be an interesting listen.  Merge will release Shriek on April 29.

:Tobacco – Eruption (Gonna Get My Hair Cut At The End Of The Summer):  If you listen to Black Moth Super Rainbow, then you’re probably familiar with the solo work of their main-brain, Tobacco.  I very much appreciate that the guy couldn’t make a “normal” song if he wanted to.  Look for Ultima II Massage on May 13 via Ghostly.

:Son Lux – Easy (Switch Screens) (Featuring Lorde):  A Lorde-enhanced version of a Son Lux song that came out last year is about as random as it gets, but I absolutely love what came of the pairing.  This new take is one of the slicker things I’ve heard so far in 2014.

:Pattern Is Movement – Climb To Me:  If there’s one thing that must be said about Pattern Is Movement, it’s definitely that they always figure out a new way to spin their already interesting sound.  The band will release a self titled album on April 1 via Hometapes.

:Pure X – Heaven:  Here’s a rather pretty new one from Austin’s Pure X.  It makes me want to kick back on a porch somewhere and then just stare off into the distance.  Angel is all set to be released on April 1 via Fat Possum.

Top 50 Songs Of 2013: Part 3

December 4, 2013

We’re now firmly in the mid-section of this list.  I hope that so far you’ve been digging it and have maybe found some new stuff.  Let me know if you have any guesses on what will be in the top spot!  Enjoy.

30)  :Action Bronson – The Rockers (Featuring Wiz Khalifa):  Out of the ton of good stuff that Action Bronson released in 2013, this track is my favorite.  He sounds great in it, and I especially dig the Wiz Khalifa verse.  From the SAAAB Stories EP.

29)  :Phantogram – Celebrating Nothing:  At some point in 2014 I’m going to finally get a new Phantogram album.  Until then, I’ll just let this gem swirl around in my head.  From their self titled EP.

28)  :Divine Fits – Ain’t That The Way:  If you ask me, this is the best Spoon cover that Divine Fits have ever done.  Ha!  Seriously though, it’s a pretty great pop song.  From the Ain’t That The Way/Chained To Love digital single.

27)  :M.I.A. – Y.A.L.A.:  Another year, another great single from M.I.A.  She may be a bit unhinged, but her work is consistently interesting and worth your time.  From Matangi.

26)  :Joanna Gruesome – Sugarcrush:  This infectious piece of noise pop has been a favorite of mine for months.  Also, as a Joanna Newsom fan, I’m admittedly a sucker for the name Joanna Gruesome.  From Weird Sister.

25)  :The Orwells – Other Voices:  While the hard working, fresh out of high school dudes in the Orwells make me feel lazy and old, I can’t help but dig their music.  This rock tune is as catchy as it gets.  From the Other Voices EP.

24)  :Son Lux – Lost It To Trying:  This song is definitely Sigur Ros-light, but I think that actually makes me like it more.  Toss on headphones or just crank your stereo, either approach works well with Son Lux.  From Lanterns.

23)  :The Men – The Seeds (Acoustic Version):  The original version of this track is rather nice, but I think the acoustic take really makes for something special.  It’s definitely my favorite song by the Men.  From the Campfire Songs EP.

22)  :Youth Lagoon – Dropla:  Throughout the year this Youth Lagoon song was one of my go-tos for when I just wanted to kick back and listen to something.  It has such a stellar, well layered arrangement.  From Wondrous Bughouse.

21)  :Lightning Dust – Loaded Gun:  I ended up not loving Lightning Dust’s new synth-enthused sound as much as I thought I would, but I do think this particular song is rad.  Be sure to jam it.  From Fantasy.

Quickdraw: Future Of The Left, The Blow, Son Lux, Shearwater, Ducktails

September 10, 2013

Today’s music doesn’t know what to do with you.  Enjoy.

:Future Of The Left – Bread, Cheese, Bow And Arrow:  Mclusky may be long gone, but at least we still have Andy Falkous plodding along as Future Of The Left.  The world needs his snarl.  How To Stop Your Brain In An Accident is due out October 21 via Prescriptions Music.

:The Blow – From The Future:  I keep listening to this wonderfully refreshing and superbly well crafted pop gem and wondering why it wasn’t the first single.  It’s just about perfect.  The Blow’s self titled album will be released on October 1 via Kanine.  See them at Red 7 on November 2.

:Son Lux – Lost It To Trying:  There’s a lot going on in this song, but it works.  Son Lux’s upcoming album is going to be really good if it’s full of tracks as dynamic as this one.  We’ll all be able to grab Lanterns on October 29 via Joyful Noise Recordings.

:Shearwater – I Luv The Valley OH!! (Xiu Xiu Cover):  It would appear that Shearwater have assembled an album of covers to pay tribute to the acts they’ve played with over the years.  I can get behind that.  The LP is titled Fellow Travelers, and it’s due out November 26 via Sub Pop.  Personally, I can’t wait to hear their version of St. Vincent’s Cheerleader.

:Ducktails – Honey Tiger Eyes:  Because staying busy is fun, Ducktails are putting out an EP directly on the heels of The Flower Lane, which came out earlier this year.  This first single is an ear-pleaser.  The Wish Hotel EP is expected out on October 22 via Domino.
