Quickdraw: Foxing, Crumb, St. Vincent, Tkay Maidza, Packs, Lucy Dacus

Enjoy.

Foxing – Speak With The Dead (Featuring WHY?)

Here’s an absolutely sprawling, epic track from Foxing. As of late, they’ve been talking up something called Draw Down The Moon, which may or may not be the title of an impending album. We’ll see.

Crumb – Trophy

Crumb’s 2019 album, Jinx, is still a big favorite of mine, so I was pretty excited to see them roll out a new track. The band has not yet announced a sophomore effort, but I’m hoping this intoxicating number turns out to be the first single from it.

St. Vincent – Pay Your Way In Pain

It’s pretty wild to think about how far St. Vincent has come from the days of tracks like Now, Now and Paris Is Burning (both are from 2007’s still-endearing Marry Me). Good on her for always evolving. Her sixth album, Daddy’s Home, is due out May 14.

Tkay Maidza – Where Is My Mind? (Pixies Cover)

4AD has a compilation coming out on April 2 – it’s called Bills & Aches & Blues and it’s meant to celebrate the label’s 40th anniversary (which – weirdly – was actually last year). Personally, I think the tracklist is kind of a head-scratcher (some real classics put out by the label are missing, and I don’t know why there aren’t 40 covers), but I do like Tkay Maidza’s slick take on the Pixie’s Where Is My Mind?.

01 Tkay Maidza – “Where Is My Mind?” (Pixies)
02 U.S. Girls – “Junkyard” (The Birthday Party)
03 Aldous Harding – “Revival” (Deerhunter)
04 The Breeders – “Dirt Eaters” (His Name Is Alive)
05 Maria Somerville – “Seabird” (Air Miami)
06 Tune-Yards – “Cannonball” (The Breeders)
07 Spencer. – “Genesis” (Grimes)
08 Helado Negro – “Futurism” (Deerhunter)
09 Efterklang – “Postal” (Piano Magic)
10 Bing and Ruth – “Gigantic” (Pixies)
11 Future Islands – “The Moon Is Blue” (Colourbox)
12 Jenny Hval – “Sunbathing” (Lush)
13 Dry Cleaning – “Oblivion” (Grimes)
14 Bradford Cox – “Mountain Battles” (Breeders)
15 SOHN – “Song To The Siren” (Tim Buckley)
16 Becky And The Birds – “The Wolves Act I And II” (Bon Iver)
17 Ex:Re – “Misery Is A Butterfly” (Blonde Redhead)
18 Big Thief – “Off You” (The Breeders)

Packs – Silvertongue

Packs are set to release their debut LP, Take The Cake, on May 14. This nice slice of slacker rock is pretty damn infectious, and I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more from the band.

Lucy Dacus – Thumbs

Hey look, it’s Lucy Dacus off the top rope with this crushing number. What a songwriter.

Written during a 15 minute car ride to dinner in Nashville, Dacus says: “Like most songs I write, I wasn’t expecting it and it made me feel weird, almost sick. It tells the story of a day I had with a friend during our freshman year of college, a significant day, but not one that I had thought of for years. I started playing it live a month or so later during the boygenius tour after Phoebe and Julien encouraged me to. I knew I wanted a long time to get used to playing it since it made me feel shaky, so I ended sets with it for about half the shows I played in 2019. Before I played it, I would ask the audience to please not record it, a request that seems to have been respected, which I’m grateful for.
