Quickdraw: Sufjan Stevens, Faye Webster, Stephen Malkmus, Mamalarky, Will Butler, Helena Deland, Matt Berninger, Rhye, Nothing, Slow Pulp

Enjoy.

Sufjan Stevens – Sugar

Here’s Sufjan Stevens with another stellar single. The Ascension is out next week (September 25) and I’m expecting it to be one of my favorite albums of 2020.

Faye Webster – Better Distractions

I just float away whenever I hear Faye Webster’s lovely voice. Side note, this is the second single she’s put out this year. Here’s hoping a full album announcement isn’t far off.

Stephen Malkmus – Juliefuckingette

This little b-side from Stephen Malkmus’ 2020 release, Traditional Techniques, is as clever and charming as can be. Fingers crossed that I actually get to see him play on April 14 at the Mohawk.

Mamalarky – Schism Trek

Mamalarky sounds like something I should start yelling whenever I get frustrated. On another note, this is a nifty piece of indie rock. The band’s self titled debut album is due out November 20.

Will Butler – Bethlehem

I’m very much into this total blast of energy from Will Butler. To be honest, I haven’t connected with any of his other recent singles, but I may circle back on them before his new solo album, Generations, arrives next week (September 25).

Helena Deland

I’ve been sleeping on Helena Deland and I most definitely should not have been – she’s a gem with one of those voices that just wraps you up. This is the third single (the others are here and here) off her debut album, Someone New (due out October 16).

Matt Berninger – One More Second

Matt Berninger’s solo debut, Serpentine Prison, is finally almost here (it’s due October 16). This is my favorite track that’s been put out so far – it’s much more Berninger than National, which is cool to hear.

Rhye – Helpless

For when you want to dance alone with a large glass of wine in each hand, there’s this super slinky new one from Rhye.

Nothing – Say Less

Nothing’s new album is called The Great Dismal and it’ll be out on October 30. I could use a good dose of shoegaze, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Slow Pulp – At It Again

There’s something about the instrument-tossing in this video that I find to be very calming. I also think the track is totally infectious. Slow Pulp’s debut album, Moveys, will be released on October 9.
