Quickdraw: Alex Lahey, Low Life, Stephen Malkmus, Aldous Harding, Jay Som, Mouse On The Keys
Alex Lahey – Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself
Alex Lahey’s 2017 release, I Love You Like A Brother, is still getting regular spins from me, as there just isn’t a song on that isn’t super catchy. Her new single is both infectious AND it has a sax solo, which means I might as well just go ahead and peg her sophomore LP, The Best Of Luck Club (due May 17), as my #1 album of 2019.
Low Life – Lust Forevermore
Alex Lahey isn’t the only Australian in today’s post, here’s Low Life as well. If you’re a fan of Joy Division, you can expect to dig their new track. The band’s album, Downer Edn, is due out March 15.
Stephen Malkmus – Rushing The Acid Frat
I didn’t much care for the first single off of Stephen Malkmus’ upcoming album, Groove Denied (due March 15), but the second one is pretty good. Probably because it’s less Kraftwerk and more him getting psychedelic. Side note, he’s playing 3TEN on May 7.
Aldous Harding – The Barrel
This video from Aldous Harding is RIDICULOUS. Seriously, I can’t watch it without laughing uncontrollably. Love the ear-pleasing tune though. Her album, Designer, is set to be released on April 26.
Jay Som – Simple
Jay Som just rolled out a new tune as a part of the Adult Swim Singles program. Grab your headphones before you hit play – it’s an intricate slow burner. Maybe she’ll deliver the follow-up to 2017’s Everybody Works this year?
Mouse On The Keys – Circle
Here’s a new standalone single from Japan’s Mouse On The Keys. The press releases it came with says it is “deliberate compositional risk-taking meets classically-informed jazz whose anthemic passages burst with filmic awe and intrigue.” What a heady description, man. I just know that I like it.
