Movie Breakdown: Overlord (Noah)
Pre-Screening Stance:
I mean this film has Wyatt Russell punching zombie Nazis. Do I need say more?
Post-Screening Ramble:
Somehow, someway, the concept of monsters being hunted by American soldiers in the explosion-pocked medieval villages of WWII Europe never loses its allure. Even though countless films, comic books and video games have played with the concept, there is something so nostalgic about the clean-faced boys of the US of A charging into the fray against the demonic mutants of Nazi Germany. Overlord doesn’t step too far past the premise, but it makes good with a sturdy action/horror hybrid that hits the notes you’ve heard before but entertainingly enough so it doesn’t really matter. Boyce (Joven Adepo) is a recently recruited soldier whose team – aside from the cold-ass killer Ford (Wyatt Russell) and a smattering of other cigar-chewing stereotypes – perishes during a parachute drop near a key radio tower waaayyyy behind enemy lines. But things are not so much what they seem and soon enough America’s finest are punching monsters in the face and running for their lives. Russell is particularly suited for the square-jawed punch-fest that is Overlord, and director Julius Avery manages to squeeze both thrills and chills from this action-packed film.
One Last Thought:
Wyatt Russell’s punches look like they could knock over a fucking barn. He’s my first pick for “Famous Person I’d Most Like To Have By My Side In A Bar Fight.”
