My Must-See Films At Fantastic Fest 2018

Fantastic Fest is here!  It’s always one of my favorite times of the year, but 2018 is packing a bit more punch since my good buddy (and fellow SOTO film reviewer) Noah will be in tow for the first time.  Oh boy!  I hope we survive.  By the way, below you’ll find the films that are currently large blips on my radar.  Enjoy.

As usual, I used Noahphex’s Youtube compilation of FF trailers.  Check it out!

PS – I left out the fest’s big films, such as Halloween, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Apostle, MID90s, Under The Silver Lake, Overlord, Hold The Dark and Bad Times At El Royale.  Of course I want to see those!

The Unthinkable

“Something unthinkable is happening in Sweden.”  I’m in!  Also, the trailer for The Unthinkable has some surprisingly snazzy visuals, so my guess is that it’s going to be good ride.

The Wind

The Wind is supposed to be like The Witch but set in a prairie.  I really love The Witch, so that’s certainly setting the bar pretty high.  Hopefully it’s a legit comparison.

Dog

Of all the Fantastic Fest trailers I’ve watched lately, only Dog made me do a double take.  It’s apparently about a guy’s transformation into … well, a dog.

Border

Border just has a clip floating around (in place of a proper trailer), but it’s so intense and captivating that I don’t need to see anything else.  Supposedly, the film is somewhat like Let The Right One In, which is a big favorite of mine.

The Quake

The Quake is a sequel to The Wave.  To be honest, I didn’t think The Wave was spectacular, but it was fun enough to get me in a seat for another go.

Burning

Burning looks like the kind of movie that will make me feel uneasy the entire time I’m watching it.  I like that.  Side note, the film was apparently very well-received at Cannes.

Holiday

Fantastic Fest’s description for Holiday makes it out to be a pretty brutal affair, but the film itself just looks so stylistic and inviting.

The World Is Yours

I’ll watch Vincent Cassel in just about anything, so it’s easy to be excited about the “instant heist-comedy classic” that The World Is Yours is supposed to be.

The Bouncer

The Bouncer features JCVD fighting people.  I’m good to go.

Open 24 Hours

Open 24 Hours is about a girl who sets her serial killer boyfriend on fire and then gets a job at a convenient store out in the middle of nowhere.  Nothing goes well.  I dig how this thing looks rife with paranoia.

Murder Me, Monster

The trailer for Murder Me, Monster is a seemingly simplistic affair, but there is quite a lot going on it.  I hope the film is the same way.

Shadow

I still haven’t forgiven Zhang Yimou for the very shitty film that is The Great Wall, but I will if Shadow turns out to be great.  The trailer is slick.

School’s Out

Creepy teens are creepy.  I can only image the ways in which School’s Out will further make me not trust youths.

The Guilty

The Guilty looks like it’ll either keep me on the edge of my seat or put me to sleep in it.  Since the trailer is good, I’m willing to roll the dice.

The Night Comes For Us

The Night Comes For Us features Sunny Pang (Headshot), Zack Lee, Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim (each from The Raid and/or The Raid 2).  It will be explosive.  I can’t wait.

Chained For Life

Right before I went to publish this post, Noah sent me the brand new trailer for Chained For Life.  It looks melancholic as can be.  I’m anxious to see it.

There’s a pretty sizeable chunk of movies that sound good, but their trailers don’t have subtitles or they don’t have trailers at all, so I don’t really know if I should be pumped for them or not.  For fun, here’s a list (with links to their descriptions).
