Mannequin Pussy – Control

Mannequin Pussy are set to follow up their excellent album from 2019, Patience, with an EP titled Perfect (due out May 21). I can’t wait! By the way, this track starts soft but ramps up quite nicely, so be sure to stick with it.

Black Midi – John L

First of all, it was weird to see my name – essentially – as the title of this track. Secondly, the song itself is a wild one and you should be prepared for it to bore a hole into your brain. Black Midi will release Cavalcade on May 28.

Bachelor – Stay In The Car

Bachelor (Jay Som’s Melina Duterte + Palehound’s Ellen Kempner) recently rolled out their debut single, and now they’ve announced their debut album – it’s called Doomin’ Sound and it’s arriving on May 28. I like the story behind this fun new single from them:

Kempner explains, “I wrote the lyrics to ‘Stay In the Car’ back in December of 2019 when I was in Florida for my partner’s top surgery. I had run out one afternoon, post op, while he was healing to grab lunch for us and as I was gathering my stuff in the parking lot, a big car pulled up and this absolutely beautiful woman got out. She was dressed all in red, dripping with jewelry and had the most wild fiery mane I’d ever seen. She was yelling at the man behind the wheel asking him what he wanted from the store and I wished I was that man. I wanted to be a part of her life, her best friend, her driver, whatever she wanted me to be. I was completely mesmerized.”

Current Joys – Amateur

There aren’t a lot of lyrics to be had in this one, but what’s there sure does hit – “You’re every song I love, can’t get away from.”

The new Current Joys album, Voyager, will be released on May 14.

Kali – I Just Wanna

Here’s an effortlessly breezy pop tune from a 16-year old (holy cow!) known as Kali. Her EP, Circles, will be out everywhere on May 7.
