Movie Breakdown: Blink Twice
Pre-Screening Stance:
Judging by the trailer, Blink Twice looks like it’s going to be an entertaining ride. There’s also the additional hook of it being Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut, and considering the original title for the movie was Pussy Island, I’m guessing she really swung for the fences here.
Post-Screening Ramble:
Blink Twice is a winner. The film, which feels like a pretty healthy mix of Get Out and Ready Or Not, is centered around a young lady named Frida (Naomi Ackie) who has a sizable crush on Slater King (Channing Tatum), a billionaire tech guy who has seemingly turned his life around after being outed for a whole lot of bad behavior. After a chance encounter, she and her best buddy Jess (Alia Shawkat) get invited to King’s private island where everything is just perfect. Until it isn’t.
I have to give it up to writer/director Zoe Kravitz, she hits all the right marks here and Blink Twice works as well as it does because of her. She keeps a brisk pace and does a great job of dropping in each twist at just the right moment. The sound and look of the movie is fantastic – champagne pours and vape rips fizz and crackle in a visceral manner and every color really pops. Furthermore, the casting is super on point. I’m going to run away from giving up too many details here, as it’ll get spoiler-y quick, but let’s just say she couldn’t have assembled a more appropriate group of women and men for this post-#MeToo affair.
Yes, you should for sure check out Blink Twice – it’s a tight, entertaining thriller. The film is in theaters as of today, August 23.
One Last Thought:
There’s a brief moment in this film where Channing Tatum interacts with an old door in a stupidly charming and endearing way, and it totally serves as a microcosm of his entire career.
