Throwback Thursday: School Of Seven Bells

June 26, 2014

I figured that their recently released Joey Ramone cover (hear it here) would be the final track to be put out by School of Seven Bells, but yesterday the band announced that they have at least one more album to deliver.  Before passing away, Benjamin Curtis apparently recorded all of his parts for an LP, so now frontwoman Alejandra Deheza will enter the studio to wrap it all up.  Fantastic!

To celebrate the good news, I’m using this week’s Throwback Thursday post to remind you of the band’s stellar 2008 debut, Alpinisms.  The wonderfully layered album is still an effort that I revisit regularly, especially whenever I’m in a headphone-only mood and want something to get lost in for a bit.

Quickdraw: School Of Seven Bells, Tycho, The Weeknd, FKA Twigs, Slow Magic

June 26, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:School Of Seven Bells – I Got Knocked Down (But I’ll Get Up):  Just when I thought the unfortunate death of Benjamin Curtis meant that School Of Seven Bells were gone forever, the remaining members release this rad Joey Ramone cover and announce a new album (Curtis contributed to both before passing away).  Awesome.

:Tycho – Awake (Com Truise Remix):  Nice work here by Com Truise.  I love Tycho’s Awake so much that I didn’t think I’d like hearing anything about it altered, but this remix is the right combo of slick and bouncy.  Grab this one-off track while you can and then seee Tycho at Emo’s on September 20.

:The Weeknd – Often:  Admittedly, this is one super ridiculous song.  I can’t seem to get it out my head though, so I’m sharing it with all of you to guarantee that I’m not the only one walking around and mumbling “Often, often/Girl I do this often/Make that pussy poppin’/Do it how I want it.”  No word yet on when The Weeknd will put out a new album.

:FKA Twigs – Two Weeks:  Those of you who have yet to familiarize yourself with FKA Twigs should immediately use this immaculate track as a way to do so.  I get the feeling that she’s going to really take off when her debut arrives.  Look for LP1 to be released on August 12 via Young Turks.

:Slow Magic – Girls:  It’s been a busy week for Slow Magic.  Not only did he put out this vibrant single, but he signed with Downtown Records and announced a large tour.  Good for him (and us).  See Slow Magic at Holy Mountain on September 17.

Quickdraw: School Of Seven Bells, Papa, Saskatchewan, Crystal Castles, Sambassadeur

November 6, 2012

Today’s music is thrilled that Austin’s festival season is over.  Enjoy.

:School Of Seven Bells – Secret Days:  This track makes me really happy.  I’ve been wanting School Of Seven Bells to get edgier instead of prettier, and this is finally them giving it a shot.  It works.  I will now become a producer (not really).  Vagrant will release the Put Your Sad Down EP on November 13.

:Papa – Put Me To Work:  I think these guys are on the verge of having all sorts of people on their bandwagon.  They’ve delivered some nice pop tracks over the last year, and now here’s this inspired effort that’s expected to show up on their new album, which will be out at some point in 2013.

:Saskatchewan – Venom:  I’ve posted a couple of tracks from Saskatchewan before, but those were charming little pop numbers.  This, however, is something entirely different.  It’s much more mature and polished.  I like it.  No word yet on when the band will release their new full length, Occasion.

:Crystal Castles – Affection:  Considering that I’ve never been a huge fan of Crystal Castles, it’s really saying something that I’ve greatly liked all three of the tracks to be released off their new album.  This intense effort may actually be my favorite.  (III) is expected out on November 12 via Universal Republic/Casablanca/Fiction.

:Sambassadeur – Memories:  This Swedish act has been absent for a bit, so it’s nice to see them back.  You can expect to love this track if you like your pop music to be retro and immaculately crafted.  Labrador will put out the Memories/Hours Away 7″ on November 20.
