Jeremy Messersmith (Jennifer)

July 9, 2014

During SXSW this year I finally was able to see Minneapolis/St Paul-based songwriter Jeremy Messersmith. A few years ago I stumbled across a couple of his music videos from animator Eric Power, who had created stuff for several Austin bands, and I was struck by his emotive, melodic vocals.. Jeremy writes lush, well-crafted, and heart tugging pop songs, or he is as he self deprecatingly describes himself on his Facebook page – “The Pied Piper of Wuss Rock.”

Earlier this year he released his latest album, Heart Murmurs.  One of the singles on the LP is Ghost, which tells the tale of a journey through the Midwest amidst the background of burning bridges and fading memories – “Been so long since I’ve been gone/doubt if you’ll know me at all/downpour did I make you proud … I’ve become a ghost in your garden/fading into view.”

He played with a full band during SXSW and they nicely fleshed out his songs to highlight the elegant harmonies and lush arrangements. It was fantastic, so of course I’m looking forward to seeing him and his band at a rare non-SXSW all ages gig this Saturday at Stubb’s. Show up and be charmed by his quietly unassuming style that subtly but strongly hooks you in.
