Well, today is probably the end
of the rock and not pop theme. There's too much going on
elsewhere for me to keep digging around for hours to come up with something
interesting. Fortunately, I'm ending the idea with a bang by way of
Light In The Attic Records' latest roster addition, the Blakes. The
trio has been DIY'ing it up for years in Seattle, but with the help of their
new label they are poised to bring their garage rock sound to the masses.
I, for one, can't wait until everyone is walking around talking about Garnet
Kiem (guitar, vocals), Snow Kiem (bass, vocals) and Bob Husak (drums).
Expect the frenzied excitement to start with the release of the Streets
EP in August and then continued with a self titled full length later in
the year. Enjoy.
:The
Blakes - Don't Bother Me:
The feel and the sound at the beginning of this makes me think that it's
what the Killers would sound like if they somehow managed to tone down their
synths, dip their sound in garage rock and then become incredibly slick.
As for the content, well, that's something that the Blakes make all their
own, as shown by lines like "Don't bother me/I'm caught up in your legs and
I don't wanna get out." Sure, the message is simple, but does such a
thing need to be all fuzzed up anyway? I think not.
:The
Blakes - Two Times:
Honestly, at first I didn't really get why so many people were comparing Bob
to Keith Moon. Then, I heard the guy pounding away like the world
could possibly cease to exist once the runtime of this raucous tune expires,
and it all started to make sense. It's amazing how well he propels the
relentless pace, but even more so I find that I'm amazed by the fact that
Garnet and Snow manage to match his intensity and contribute an equal amount
of spirited rocking.
