Continuing the theme of bear
named bands this week is the Muggabears! Way back in November of last
year I posted about their Pavement-esque EP, Teenage Cop, and when I
ended my ramble I stated that I needed to hear more "now." Apparently
the band took that to heart and now, just a few short months later, they
have delivered unto me their brand spanking new EP, Night Choreography.
Like Teenage Cop the new disc was recorded with Dan Long at Headgear
Recordings and it features some splendid noise filled, fuzzed out indie
rock. April 3 looks like the date in which the EP will be arriving for
public consumption, but since that is far from being certain I would advise
that you treasure the songs below so that you don't end up having to go
without. Enjoy.
:Muggabears - Dead Kid Kicks:
For me this is the standout song on Night Choreography. I
absolutely love how it begins with a vintage indie rock sound before
steadily deconstructing into pure fuzzed out noise-pop the longer that the
song goes on. Clearly, the Muggabears' sound owes a lot to bands like
Pavement and Sonic Youth but their pop sensibility and penchant for well
timed noise explosions provides what makes them such a messy good time. "I
do declare/Let's get it on."
:Muggabears - Rings:
In complete opposite of Dead Kid Kicks this song starts out with the
noise turned all the way up, and then moves onto an overall sound that feels
like early Cursive before pulling itself apart in the last few seconds with
the line "But you were heaven-sent" being softly sung. My favorite
part comes in around the 1:30 mark when all the noise dies down and it's
just Travis and Emily singing together; it's amazing how that moment just
suddenly shoves the song in a different direction.
