Quickdraw: Camera Obscura, Royel Otis, Dehd, Vessel, Majesty Crush
Enjoy.
Camera Obscura – Big Love
Camera Obscura are one of the best indie pop bands ever (their song French Navy will always be a default go-to for me), so it’s pretty great to see them back with their first album in just over 10 years – Look To The East, Look To The West will be released on May 3. They’re also heading out on tour, with a stop in Austin at the Scoot Inn set for June 15. By the way, the first single here is a real charmer.
Royel Otis – Murder On The Dancefloor (Sophie Ellis-Bextor Cover)
Saltburn brought Sophie Ellis Bexter’s 2001 single Murder On The Dancefloor back from the dead in a big way, so I imagine it’s going to get covered a lot this year. Either way, I think Royel Otis really nailed their take. Side notes, the band has a new album, Pratts & Pain, coming out on February 16, and for those in Austin, they’re playing the Parish on May 8.
Dehd – Mood Ring
Here’s a fuzzy retro-leaning bop off of Dehd’s newly announced album, Poetry, which will be out on May 10. If you’re planning to attend Austin Psych Fest in April, they’ll be there.
Vessel – Game
Wrapped In Cellophane is the title of Vessel’s debut album, and it will be released on April 2. I really like this track – it’s got a bit of playfulness to it while also carrying a post-punk lean.
Majesty Crush – No. 1 Fan
I wasn’t familiar with Majesty Crush – a shoegaze band from the early 90s – before the announcement of their career-spanning double LP, Butterflies Don’t Go Away (due out February 20), but I’ve quickly become a fan. Headphones recommended. Also, if you have a moment, you should read up on the band.
