Movie Breakdown: Together Together
Pre-Screening Stance:
Together Together looks like a very charming, quirky little thing. I’m down, especially since it has the venerable Ed Helms in it.
Post-Screening Ramble:
Together Together is an endearing effort that details the relationship between a fella named Matt (Ed Helms), and his gestational surrogate, Anna (Patti Harrison). To be clear though, I don’t mean “relationship” in a romantic way, as this is not that kind of movie. While they’re both single, Matt is in his 40s, Anna is in her 20s, and they’re very different people. However, their lives have plateaued and their arrangement could turn things around for each of them – Matt will get to start the family he’s always wanted, and Anna will get the money she needs to attend college.
I do think the final moment of this film is one that’s heavy and will stick in your head for awhile, but the rest of it holds a nice sense of humor and never lets things get overly emotional. Largely, this is due to Helms and Harrison, who have great chemistry and provide levity to every scene they’re in, but I think the writing here is great, too. There are so many candid conversations and awkward moments that the progression each character makes feels real and earned. Also, I can’t recall the last time I saw a film like this one (essentially a rom-com) that actually campaigns for its lead characters to remain single. Neat.
The film will open in select theaters this Friday, April 23, and on VOD platforms on Tuesday, May 11.
One Last Thought:
Ed Helms and Patti Harrison are – again – great in this movie, but I think my favorite cast member is actually Julio Torres. His character is very funny in the oddest of ways, and I would perk up every time the film would cut to the coffee shop where he works.
