Top 10 Films Of 2018

For the eighth year in a row, I saw over 100 new releases!  I don’t know if there’s any real significance to this (other than to point out that I sure like movies), but there’s that nugget anyways.  Below you’ll find my Top 10!  Enjoy.

10) Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

A sweet, endearing documentary about possibly the sweetest, most endearing man of all-time.

09) First Reformed

Ethan Hawke is fantastic in this very bleak film from Paul Schrader.  I’ve yet to get the following line out of my head – “A life without despair is a life without hope.”

08) Annihilation

Alex Garland’s second film was easily the most interesting piece of sci-fi to come out in 2018.  On a related note, I think the scene with the nightmare-bear was the scariest thing I saw this year.

07) A Star Is Born

I know this story has been retold time and time again … and there are certainly a few things about this particular iteration that aren’t great, but Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut is an inspired effort that swept me right off my feet.

06) Hereditary

As a lover of slow burn horror, this creepy, anxiety-riddled film really hit the spot.

05) Paddington 2

Paddington gets sent to prison in this film, and somehow his experience there is one of the most heartwarming things I’ve ever seen.  This movie is impossible to not love.

04) Avengers: Infinity War

I was worried this would be a cluttered mess, but it actually turned out to be a sharply-crafted and emotionally hefty ride.  The bar has been set high for Endgame, that’s for sure.

03) Mid90s

Jonah Hill’s directorial debut vividly reminded me of my teen years.  It’s also just a great coming of age film.

02) The Favourite

I’m not sure I saw sharper, more clever film than this one in 2018.  It’s a shame that there isn’t a way to give each of the three women (Olivia Coleman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz) in it an Oscar – they’re all deserving of one.

01) Mission: Impossible – Fallout

I’ve seen Fallout a few times now, and I really do think it’s one of the best action films ever released.  In fact, it’s so great that I’m not even sure they should bother making any more Mission Impossible entries.  How will they ever top it?  Either way, this movie is the truest definition of a blockbuster, and that’s why it’s my top film of 2018.

For fun, here’s another 15 films that I really liked in 2018.

If Beale Street Could Talk
Roma
A Quiet Place
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
Border
First Man
Sorry To Bother You
