Musical discoveries seem a little bit sweeter when you stumble across them and you're not concerned with any buzz or hype. Earlier this month, I attended a mini-fest known as Rockaway Beach Party at Spider House Cafe, and I got there early enough to see a local quartet by the name of Good Field. The airy, shimmery vibe of the songs filled the room as they played the tiny stage inside the cafe that was lit only by the sunlight filtering through the window shades.

Good Field began as a solo project for Paul Price and he later enlisted the help of friends to release their self titled debut album in back in February. I bought the CD at their show, and it's been on frequent rotation at home. For me, it's been a perfect fit for bedtime listening. The soothing vocals and harmonies make for sweet dreams, and the well crafted, catchy quality of the songs should be endearing to fans of intelligent pop music.

Sometimes I can be stubborn when it comes to catching on to local acts that friends and acquaintances are raving about to me, and that's exactly what happened with Bobby Jealousy. In the end, after seeing them play live a few times and listening to their debut album, A Little Death, I let my defenses down and went about becoming a fan.  They combine glam, punk, rock, pop, and soul into a delectable musical stew, and the energy from their live set is infectious and incredibly fun.  I also especially like the three lead singers who play off of and harmonize with each other in a seamless fashion.

In a couple of weeks, the band is heading out on a summer tour with Austin's Shivery Shakes. The tour kickoff show will be at Red 7 on June 12, and it is not to be missed. The lineup is packed with other local greats, such as Oh No Oh My, the Great Nostalgic, BOY, The Couch, Jason Ludwig, and Burgess Meredith. Come on out and see why Bobby Jealousy have been steadily gathering a devoted and enthusiastic local following, and then tell your friends outside of Austin to catch them on their summer tour. If they give you any push back, just mention what I recently learned - it pays to listen to your friends once in awhile.
