For the
sake of not having to write the same intro a million
different ways throughout the rest of time, just know that
this column avoids the overly long and sometimes dull
process of full film reviews and instead opts to break
things down based on what I thought going in, what happened
while I was there and what I learned at the end of it all.
Hope that's OK.

The
Breakdown - John Carter
The Impression:
Director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E)
makes his live action debut by way of an adaptation that
many have tried (and failed) to pull off for decades.
The Reality:
John Carter is good. I don't know if the world
is going to give it the chance it deserves, but if people
decide to head to the theater, they won't be disappointed.
Stanton has crafted an interesting world, assembled a very
solid cast, and managed to do sci-fi on an impressive,
Avatar-like level. Those things, as you probably
know, aren't easy to get right, and you at least have to
appreciate that they work well. If there's anything
lackluster to expect from John Carter, it's the
overall story. There are a couple of weak/bland
moments, and you have to be fully committed to the far-out
plot before you even take a seat in the theater.
Neither, though, should keep you from checking it out.
The Lesson:
Sci-fi on a grand scale just isn't something the world sees
enough of.
