For ten years
Travis Morrison led the Dismemberment Plan, DC’s most
creative, intelligent, and lovable band. After they called
it quits, there was considerable anticipation for Morrison’s
solo album. However, the reviews of Travistan were
harsh and, in hindsight, pretty unfair. It just failed to
live up to sky high expectations. After the LP tanked,
Travis formed the Hellfighters, and in 2007 they put out the
exemplary and quirky All Y’all. The act recorded
three tracks in late 2008, but broke up shortly thereafter,
leaving the songs in limbo. Morrison then ended any
speculation on his solo career with a message on his web
site, "RETIRED! No shows, no records, no band. Just relaxing
in Brooklyn. Follow me on Twitter. I'm so nice!."
So what happened to those three unreleased Hellfighter
tracks? Well, late last year Tommy Siegel of Jukebox the
Ghost and Ryan Little of Tereu Tereu decided to form
Bad Friend Records to promote deserving DC
bands and release music that they love. There a lot of
artists that aren’t on a label and simply cannot afford to
have their records made (especially the vinyl presses), so
the guys took to Kickstarter and quickly had the money they
needed to put out their first 7". I happily backed the
project and this week my record finally arrived. If you like
great pop tracks, appreciate Morrison’s unique storytelling
ability, or just love songs about gay cops, then the
Cruisin’ (All Night Long) EP from the Hellfighters is a
must have. Check out the Bad Friends
Bandcamp page to stream the songs, get the
7” or buy the digital tracks.
