Today's Quick Mention:  You need to come down to the Mohawk tonight to celebrate No Play Music's release of the Sour Notes and Marmalakes split 7".  Naturally, both bands will be playing, but they'll also be joined by Speak, the Calm Blue Sea, Roky Moon And Bolt, Follow That Bird, Buxton, and Technicolor Hearts.  That's a lineup full of sweet victory, and you shouldn't miss it.  Doors are at 7pm.  Tix are a silly $8.

And now, the aforementioned split 7".  Enjoy.

The Sour Notes are one of the hardest working bands in Austin, and I feel as though songs like this one serve as proof.  Why?  Because this number has all sorts of stuff going on it.  That might make you think it's a cluttered mess, but it isn't.  The band, like always, has put in the necessary effort to make it work, and the end result is a track that makes for a great listen.  So, throw on some headphones and get to it.

While I really like both songs that make up the split, I think the Marmalakes tune is my favorite.  It's a rather well crafted piece of pop that features some great vocal work and a fantastic arrangement that's loose and playful.  Expect to find it infectious enough to leave on repeat for probably far too long.  By the way, these guys are on the way up, and you should jump on their bandwagon now.
