Houston punk trio
The Energy
roll into Beerland tomorrow for the final show of
the East Coast tour they’ve been on in support of
their garage rock-enthused sophomore release, Get
Split. I often prefer the fun-loving, slacker
type of garage rock (think Harlem or The Black
Lips), but that’s not The Energy’s style. They
prefers speed and precision over slow and sloppy.
Their music is hard, fast, and proves that the band
name isn’t meant to be ironic.
Get Split kicks off with the anthemic Live
In Ruin and is followed up with the first
single, Thinking Cameras. Those killer tracks
set the tone for the whole album. It features smart,
tight guitar work and lyrics littered with violence
and paranoia. The Get Split songs are
primarily sharp and catchy, but things go in a whole
different direction on the album closer. The epic
and brilliant nine minute track Wastin’ Tape
begins as a psychedelic and sludgy jam before
shifting to a hard rocking rhythm, then a bass
driven section, and about three other sections
before ending with some classic speed punks riffs.
From start to finish the record delivers and is a
must have for any true punk and garage fan.
