It’s been a
long while since we’ve heard much of anything from
Fanfarlo’s camp. Two years ago, the London-based quintet
were sparkle-eyed fledglings with the potential to cement
themselves into indie canon. Reservoir was one of
those epic debut albums that had you know, despite having
this good thing already in your hands, even greater things
were set to come. Well after having been tucked away in the
studio, Fanfarlo lifted the veil and gave us Replicate.
The release effectively serves us a peek of what’s under the
covers rather than completely revealing what’s in store with
the as of yet untitled sophomore album slated for release
early next year. One thing is known though, it’s more than
enough to keep everyone wondering what exactly they’ve been
working on.
Replicate is a sparse track, but that’s not to say
it’s void of elements. As it typically goes with Fanfarlo,
rather than being blatant and ostentatious, the subtleties
of the track are what end up being the heaviest elements,
and this song is indeed heavy. With the stuttering strings
of the violin and vocals that pause at the moment
something’s set to be revealed, Replicate builds a
tense, suspenseful atmosphere. Synth falls onto the track
drop by drop adding more and more weight until an epiphany
is reached midway through the track and the foreboding,
ominous set that was dropped on you starts to lift - a
little at first, then a little bit more. Just as you’re
ready to take everything head on from there out ...
everything stops. Yes, Replicate is the first track
from their next release, and it’s quite the tease. This song
sets course towards an intriguing new direction that makes
up, in no doubt, just a small piece of the entirely larger
vessel that Fanfarlo still has in store.
