So, Best Coast
are in the news again. These fuzzy indie rock darlings have
composed a new song for Ray Bans and it's pretty fantastic.
Johnny Marr (of The Smiths, for those of you who are less
depressed) curated the Ray Bans project, making it more
"legitimate" or whatever. "In Your Sleep" is Best Coast's
offering, and fans will not be disappointed with the tracks
gauzey pop dream sensibility. And of course no BC track
would be complete without Bethany Cosentino’s trademark
lovelorn lyrics. Sleeping with quiet, damaged bad boys!
Wanting them to be your boyfriend while they won’t commit!
Lazy vocals and catchy choruses! Cosentino delivers the BC
product, and I’m buying in.

Coast - In Your Sleep:
In other Best Coast news, Cosentino has united with her
equally buzzy boyfriend (Nathan Williams of Wavves) to sing
on a track for the new Wavves EP, Life Sux. The song
is called "Nodding Off" and takes full advantage of the
couple’s alt-cutesy vibes. Wavves keeps their beach-obsessed
garage rock loud and unclear, with crunchy riffs and a
simple but effective rhythm section. Williams delivers his
usual super-bored vocal stylings, but Cosentino provides
some relief from the monotone with her sugar-sweet backup
vocals. It’s a fun tune, but as BC-WVVS collaborations go, I
slightly prefer their song "Got Something For You," written
last year for a Target holiday compilation. Clocking in at 2
minutes, the song makes clever use of jingle bells and is a
little more even-handed vocally. It’s seasonal, it’s
adorable, and the lyrics are cheeky and fun.
