You know what's
fun? Kicking the weekend off early, and that's why I'm
recommending that you head down to the Mohawk tomorrow night
and order yourself one of those large Brooklyn Lager cans
(or a Lone Star tallboy, if you prefer), and then sit back
and enjoy four great Austin bands:
Black Books,
Residual Kid,
Boy + Kite, and
La Snacks.
Tomorrow's show began as an EP release show for Residual
Kid, but it has taken on a new meaning. Their music
instructor and producer of their Box EP, Jonas
Wilson, lost his house, belongings, and recording studio in
the recent Bastrop wildfires, so they decided to turn the
night into a benefit. Of course, the EP will still be
celebrated, but all of their proceeds from this event will
go to the
Disastronauts Foundation.
:Black
Books - Green Screen:
Black Books are
one of my favorite discoveries of 2012. With vocals
reminiscent of Jim James and music that alternates beautiful
melodies with anthemic apexes, it’s little wonder the band
draws comparisons to My Morning Jacket. It’s not all indie
southern rock, though, as the band also delves into
psych-rock and dream pop. The band will release a split 7"
with
Royal Forest in the near future, which
seems like a natural pairing since each band mixes
keyboards, found sounds and traditional rock into densely
layered and textured songs.
:Residual
Kid - Make Up Your Mind:
Residual Kid is
very likely the youngest band you’ll find playing down on
Red River. The eldest member of the band is only 13! And
they're celebrating the release of an EP! It's crazy.
As you'll see in this track, the music is good, but I have
to say that it's mostly fun just to see these kids play
instruments that seem far too big for them.
:Boy
+ Kite - Thinking In Stereo:
This is the
lead single off their self-released debut album, Go Fly.
It was smart to put this song out first. It’s so damn catchy
and I’m not surprised it has been receiving a bunch of radio
play. I especially love that it sounds like much of the
alt-rock music I listened to while in college. I need a copy
of their whole album before I ruin my fascination with them
listening to this one track over and over and over again.
:La
Snacks - Christ Shakes And Milkshakes:
Rounding out
the night are our good friends La Snacks. Always
entertaining and always danceable, La Snacks are a constant
reminder it’s okay to have a little fun and forget the rest
of the bullshit. I heard a rumor the band was taking an
extended hiatus, so I’m happy to see Robert and the guys are
still playing stages all around Austin. Life is better with
some La Snacks mixed in.
