Today's Quick Mention: The guilty
pleasure side of me wants to tell you to see Taking
Back Sunday tonight, but really you should catch the
Midgetmen, the Parson Redheads and Viva Voce at the
Mohawk. They're playing inside. Doors at
9pm. Tix are $10.
Let's get this week rolling. Enjoy.
:The
Dead Trees - My Time Has Just Begun:
Somewhere along the way I missed out on the news that these
guys had readied a new full length. It's probably Wall
Street's fault. Anyhow, this charming pop tune is the
second single off the self-released WHATWAVE, which
the band recorded with the help of $17,000 worth of
donations from a Kickstarter project. That number is
crazy, right? Or is it just me thinking that?
:Cate
Le Bon - Work:
Any artist that Annie Clark (of St. Vincent, in case you've
been living in a volcano) is willing to take on the road is
a friend of mine. Actually, to be honest, that's not
true at all. I certainly prefer the music to be good,
and this quirky song from Cate Le Bon certainly is.
She'll be playing ACL Live at the Moody Theater on October
24, and Puts Me To Work is out now via The Control
Group.
:Rob
Crow - Prepare To Be Mined:
A few years ago I got the chance to spend some time with Rob
Crow, and he wasn't exactly what I would describe as
pleasant. His music, however, is usually pretty good,
so I'll just take this nifty pop track and try not to
remember that his seemingly least favorite thing to do is
talk to the media. He Thinks He's People is out
October 18 via Temporary Residence LTD.
:Stevie
Jackson - Man Of God:
Not to be confused with the Buffalo Bills' Stevie Johnson
(for those of you that are fantasy football fans), Stevie
Jackson is the guitarist for Belle And Sebastian. He's
crafted a solo full length, and this infectious effort is
the first track he's put out to support it. (I
Can't Get No) Stevie Jackson is currently available
digitally, but it won't be in physical
form until October 24.
:TV
Girl - Girls Like Me:
As I've said before, TV Girl have quickly become one of my
favorite acts. The songwriting is on the sappy,
borderline tween side, but every song they churn out carries
a great hook and exudes warmth. The Small Plates
7" is due out tomorrow. If the world is lucky this duo
will continue their trend of little releases every couple of
months.
