For my preview
I picked four bands that I was already was familiar with and
four I discovered while listening to Bandcamp’s
compilation of artists performing at SXSW
2011. The compilation features 470 different acts, and I
listened to each and every one of them so that I could bring
you only the very best groups. Okay, I didn’t actually
listen to all 470, but I listened to a shitload.
Onto my SXSW picks for 2011. If you hear something you like
then I’d recommend checking out Do512,
Sched.org
and
Showlist Austin
to see when and where the band is playing.
- Dan's SXSW Picks -
:An
Horse - Camp Out:
I missed out when this Australian indie-rock duo was here
for SXSW a few years ago and I have vowed not to make the
same mistake. I’m a huge fan of their debut album,
Rearrange Beds, and I’m anxiously awaiting their new
record, Walls.
:The
Knux - She's So Up:
I don’t listen to as much hip-hop as I should and I see it
live even less. This SXSW I aim to remedy that. I first got
into The Knux a few years back when I heard their single
Cappucinno. Just listen to any of their tunes and it’s
hard to imagine these guys not putting on a great show.
Wild Flag
soexcitedsoexcitedsoexcitedsoexcitedsoexcited. Two-thirds of
Sleater-Kinney in a new band? Yes, please! I don’t even had
a song to share. I just have to let everyone know how
insanely pumped I am to see Janet Weiss and Carrie
Brownstein back onstage together.
:These
United States - Water And Wheat:
One of my favorite local bands when I lived in DC. I can’t
pass up a chance to see them play again. *Shameless Plug
Alert* The guys will be headlining a day party my friends
and I are hosting -
DC
Does Texas. Stop by Lovejoy’s on Wednesday
between 12-6 PM to see the best our Capital has to offer.
Beers are on me!
Here are the bands I learned about while listening to the
Bandcamp compilation:
:Experimental
Aircraft - Stellar:
How have I not heard of this Austin band? Considering I
cover the Austin music scene for SOTO it’s a little
embarrassing I’m just learning of this band’s swirling and
fuzzy space rock. I think I need to get out more.
:Youth
Pictures Of Florence Henderson - Let's Rent Bikes From 1942:
With a name like that, you know it has to be good ... or
utterly horrible. One or the other. In the case of this
Norwegian band, it’s all good. I’m a sucker for great
post-rock and this band delivers.
:A
Classic Education - What My Life Could Have Been:
I can’t
pinpoint what it is about this band that grabbed my
attention. There’s just something unique and engaging about
their brand of indie-pop-rock.
:This
Is The Kit - Earthquakes:
I’m usually not drawn to folk groups, but I this is an
infectious little tune that you can’t help but like. It’s
simple, sweet, and handclappy. Like something you’d hear
around a campfire.
