Today's Quick Mention: Plenty to see
this weekend. Tonight you'll find the Rosebuds
and Other Lives at the Parish, and Dark Water Hymnal
and the Calm Blue Sea at the Mohawk. Tomorrow
Quin Galavis has a CD release show at Beerland, and
Alela Diane is playing the inside of Stubb's.
With all of that I'd advise napping on Sunday, but
it may also be a good idea to see Eastern Conference
Champions at Emo's.
Let's close this silly week. Enjoy.

Ward - Broken Songs (Featuring Tegan Quin):
"I don't find success as interesting as art." I had
the rather random opportunity to chat with Jim a few times
earlier this year, and I thought he came off exactly like
that lyric - honest. If you don't at least like that a
little bit, you're dead, and this well crafted tune isn't
going to do anything for you. Quiet In The Valley,
On The Shores The End is due August 2 on Tembloroso
Recordings.

Castles - Juice:
I've decided to give up on trying to figure this act out.
They're just too good at sounding random as ever and
totally calculated. It's bizarre and somewhat throws
my brain for a loop, but the songs are strangely infectious
and I'm just going to say it'll make sense when I'm older.
Way to be, Tony Castles! The Juice 7" just came
out this past week on Famous Class.
:Follow
That Bird - Wooden Bones:
Follow That Bird have long been spewing out random great
bits of indie rock around Austin, so it's nice to finally
see them "officially" putting something out. Like
always though, that's an easy thing to say when the new
stuff is this good. The band is currently on the road
opening for Trail Of Dead, and you can get their 7" on Mt.
Fuji Records now.
:Collections
Of Colonies Of Bees - Lawn:
The last I heard from this band they were in the process of
joining up with Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver fame) for a
project called Volcano Choir. Now, they're back on
their own, and their experimental ways still sound good
enough to get my excited about the new album they've
assembled. It's titled Giving and is due out
August 2 via Hometapes.

- Harsh Realm:
Acts like this are hard for me to not like. Yes, the
early Cat Power-esque sound that's on display in this track
is something we've all heard a million times over, but
they're so good at it that the familiarly of it isn't at all
a concern. I just want more. The trio just
signed to Captured Tracks, and their self titled debut will
be released on August 9.
