Today's Quick Mention: There's some
nice shows this weekend. Tomorrow you'll be
able to see Weird Weeds at the Mohawk, RJD2 at the
Belmont, or the Sour Notes at Hole In The Wall.
On Sunday, just make sure you're at the Paramount
for the beautiful Joanna Newsom.
Music and words. Enjoy.

Babes - Be So True:
While I would have listened to it if someone sent it over, I
have to admit I wasn't feeling any real need to seek out
this band's debut. Then this track came along.
Sure, it sounds as though no one cared about production
values when it was recorded, but just like the last their
last single, it's a blast to sing-a-long with. Old
Flame Records will release the sure-to-be-fun Swimming
Through Sunlight on August 30.

Estate - Barely Legal (Strokes Cover):
This band is great at sounding simple and slick, so it
doesn't surprise me that they were easily able to take this
originally kinetic tune and turn it into something much more
relaxed. I dig it. Stereogum slapped together a
tribute for the 10th anniversary of the Strokes' Is This
It, and that's where you'll find this track.
Stroked is free and can be downloaded
here.

- Dimitri Mendeleev:
This guy has the kind of live show that I prefer to never
miss, but his albums have yet to be anything I've wanted to
repeatedly visit. This, hopefully, might be changing.
I like this track a lot, and his upcoming LP is said to be
an adventurous one in the sound department, which could mean
we're in for a neat listen. This Is Our Science
is due September 13 via Fake Four Inc.
:Mikal
Cronin - Apathy:
This guy's name didn't ring any bells when I first saw it,
but it should have since he's done some stuff with Ty Segall
and is a part of the Moonhearts. Oh well. At
least this infectious pop tune is good enough to make me
quickly forget about how none of you told me about him or
his other projects earlier. Cronin's self titled LP is
due September 20 via Trouble In Mind.

Kasher - The Jessica:
Once upon time Tim Kasher was a sarcastic, bitter bastard
that wrote some of the best emo/indie rock songs around.
And now? He's softened up. A lot. I don't
like the recent version near as much, but I'm so attached to
his voice and songwriting style (regardless of what the
lyrics actually end up being) that I'm hooked for life.
Bigamy: More Songs From The Monogamy Sessions is a
tour only EP.
