To start, NewVillager is a group. From there, you can call them what you want - a band, an artist collective, a tribe built on mythos. The truth is, despite being quite open about their work and identity, I find this group every bit as mysterious as the NewVillager term itself. What I do know is this - the core duo of this group that are Ben Bromley and Ross Simonini have brought about a creative force to be reckoned with, and surely such ruckus will be made come the release of their debut self-titled full-length in August. It’s only right to expect experimental elements in the work of an artist collective, and certainly NewVillager take all elements of the term "musical artist" into mind. In their definition, NewVillager isn’t so much a group as it is a concept on creativity and collaborative expression. Is there success in their concept? This NewVillager mythology? Perhaps it’s the psychedelics of their synthpop, but there really is a striking spirit to their music. It all sounds wonderfully pretentious, but the results are undeniable - this is some good music. NewVillager’s debut album will be out August 16 on IAMSOUND.
