Today's Quick Mention: My pals the
Lovely Sparrows continue their summer residency
tonight at the Mohawk, and you should go. It's
free! Plus, it'll make you look really cool.
Five tracks for the long week ahead. Enjoy.
:Dominant
Legs - Hoop Of Love:
About a year ago this band put out an EP that had a couple
of interesting little pop numbers, and now they're back with
their debut full length. If we're lucky, the entire
thing will be full of tracks that are as infectious as this
is. The consistently great Lefse is where the band
calls home, and the label will put out Invitation on
September 29.
:Mister
Heavenly - Bronx Sniper:
Because of the people involved (Nick Thornburn, Honus Honus,
Joe Plummer), I keep expecting every new song to be
something that defines bizarre. Nope! So far
it's all been stuff that doesn't necessarily indicate any
chances have been taken. On the bright side, the music
does sound inspired, and that's reason enough to be excited
for Out Of Love. It's out August 16 on Sub Pop.
:My
Brightest Diamond - Reaching Through To The Other Side:
Look who's back! The world needs a constant dose of
the super talented Shara Worden, so her being out for chunks
of time is just all wrong. Be sure to grab some
headphones, because you're going to need them for this well
crafted and atmospheric gem. All Things Will Unwind
is due out October 18 via Asthmatic Kitty.
:Big
Troubles - Misery:
Receiving a shimmering two and a half minute pop track from
a Slumberland Records act is easily the least surprising
thing that happens to me on a weekly basis.
Thankfully, the songs are almost always good, so things
could be a lot worse. Big Troubles will release the
Sad Girls 7" on August 30, and then the Romantic
Comedy LP on September 27.
:Wooden
Shjips - Lazy Bones:
This band is usually a bit too weird for me, but I really
like this first single off their upcoming full length.
It's got a cool 70s psych thing going on, and while it
doesn't necessarily have a hook, there's still plenty of
little things that will get lodged in your head.
West will be available for your consumption on September
13 via Thrill Jockey.
