I was recently listening to the folks in the Sound Opinions podcast debate the new Battles album, and the praise thrown out for its driving rhythms and phenomenal drumming got me thinking one of my favorite bands from Washington, DC, Imperial China.

Imperial China, or ImpChin as they are affectionately called by fans, is a three piece that plays a glorious racket of experimental post-punk with tints of math rock, post-rock and electronica. They've released one EP (Methods) and one full-length (Phosphenes), and they're scheduled to release their next album in September. Naturally, I couldn't be more excited. There’s something about their intense, even angry disco beats, mixed with frenetic guitar and amazing drumming that I just love.

Despite my constant begging, I've had no luck getting them to play Austin, but I’m hopeful that will change when the new album is released this fall. For anyone who loved the new Battles album or just happen to be looking for something more experimental, I highly recommend Imperial China. They're easily the best band in DC today.
