This weekend I
flew to Washington, DC for the highly anticipated
Dismemberment Plan reunion. The legendary DC band decided to
join up again to briefly tour in support of the re-issue of
Emergency And I. It’s regarded as their masterpiece and
the re-release recently received a rare 10.0 from
Pitchfork.
For as long as the band "was" around, I was actually in
attendance. I went to college with bassist Eric Axelson and guitarist
Jason Caddell. The third show they ever played was in the
basement of my college house back in 1993. The band only
knew six songs, so after they finished they partied for a
while and then went back downstairs to play the same six
songs again. Even though the band was young and raw you
could tell they had something special. Hard to believe
they've been impressing me for 18 years.
The first of three shows in DC was on Friday night at the
Black Cat. Travis Morrison kicked things off with his
traditional greeting: "Hi, we’re the Dismemberment Plan from
Washington, DC." The next 90 minutes were a raucous and
joyous sing-along/concert that's semi-difficult to describe
since being in the midst of hardcore Plan fans is something
that needs to be experienced. Fortunately, the following video
pretty much captures the mood of the evening. As you'll see,
the band is
clearly having a great time and the fans couldn’t be happier as
they storm the stage for Ice of Boston. Look closely and
you can see me back by the drum set!
It’s disappointing that the reunion tour doesn’t include a
stop here in Austin. For as many times as I’ve seen the
Dismemberment Plan, I always leave their shows thinking the
same thing: "Damn, that was awesome. I’d love to see those
guys just one more time."
