Robyn stormed
the newest venue in Austin this past week, and I was there.
Below you'll find some thoughts and more on the show.
All pictures were taken by me, John Laird.
Natalia
Kills
I went into the
show not knowing who Natalia Kills was, and I left wishing I
had not gained such knowledge. Oh well. I've
suppose I've seen worse, and I can at least give her (and
her dancers) some credit for giving it their all.
Diamond
Rings
I like Diamonds
Rings and based on what I saw of his set Thursday night,
he's pretty solid live. However, I just don't think
he's ready to play such a large venue, especially when it's
packed with a crowd that would pay for there to be no
openers if it meant a longer set from the headliner.
Hopefully I can catch him somewhere smaller later this year.

Rings - All Yr Songs:
Robyn
I expected
a great show from Robyn, and yet she was still able to leave
me rather impressed. And not just because she came out
and did all of her best songs and performed in a way that
even non-fans would have respected, but because of the grip
that she had on the crowd.
While in the photo pit I glanced at the set list and noticed
a plan for multiple encores. Initially I was worried,
because I just didn't see the too-cool-for-school Austin
crowd buying into such shenanigans, and I couldn't help but
picture a mass exodus once she disappeared from the
spotlight. Fortunately, that feeling quickly
dissipated once she took the stage and put everyone into one
of those spazzy/obsessive trances. I'm not sure I've
ever seen so many shirtless people dancing like it's the
greatest moment of their entire life. By the way,
thinking back about the legion of hardcore fans that were in
attendance forces me conjure up a question - why the hell
isn't Robyn just massively huge in the US?
Anyhow, the point of all this is that missing Robyn is not a
smart move. See her, and do it as often as possible.
Note: In just a week and after only two shows, the ACL Live
at the Moody Theater has already become one of my favorite
venues in town. The place has magnificent sound, an
ideal layout, plenty of bars, nice bathrooms and anything
you could hope for out of a place that allows you to watch
music. I want to live there.
