Today's Quick Mention: Miss out on some
of the Best Picture noms? Or maybe you just
want to see them all again? Then it might be a
good idea for you to check out the
mini-marathons
that the Alamo Drafthouse will be having. If
you actually go be sure to tell them I should get
paid for this generous plug.
I realize an EP on a Thursday is a bit out of the
ordinary, but I had five songs that needed to be
shared as soon as possible. Enjoy.
:The
Strokes - Under Cover Of Darkness:
Just so we can be perfectly clear, this is not one of the
best things the Strokes have ever done. In fact, I'm
not even sure I'd say it's one of their ten best songs.
I would, however, call it one nice comeback track that's
just nifty enough (especially the guitar work) to get me
excited about their upcoming LP. Angles is out
March 21 via RCA. You know you want it.
:Forbidden
Friends - Tiny Hands:
I dig this little pop number and I fully approve of Thermals
frontman Hutch Harris doing his own thing, but it should
probably be said that this isn't drastically different than
what's populated his main band's last two full lengths.
Although, this is just one track, so maybe he's got a trick
up his sleeve. The Tiny Hands 7" is due March
15 via Kill Rock Stars. This song goes out to my
friend Kendra.
:The
Raveonettes - Forget That You're Young:
I adore this band. For the last decade they've
consistently put out great music and taken just enough
chances with their sound to make each album seem like a
completely different endeavor. This track isn't quite
as psych-rock as what they last did, so we might be in store
for a more "slick" effort. Raven Is The Grave
is due April 5.
:J
Mascis - Is It Done:
With the arrival of this track J's upcoming solo full length
has gone from somewhere in the middle to nearly the top of
my anticipated album list. The acoustic thing just
works amazingly well for the guy, and I can't get enough.
Expect to quickly fall in love with everything about this
song. Several Shade Of Why will be out March 15
via Sub Pop.
:Generationals
- Greenleaf:
A about a year and a half ago I had the chance to see these
guys open for Broken Social Scene, but because I decided to
arrive late I ended up completely missing their set.
Oops. That was totally a misstep on my part, as
they've turned out to be one glorious pop act that will soon
take over the world. Actor-Caster is due March
29 via Park The Van. I can't wait.
