Today's Quick Mention: I know it's
Monday, but there's actually a couple of good shows
tonight. Tristen (hear a track below) is at
the Mohawk. Smith Westerns and Yuck (hear a
track below) are at Emo's. You could probably
make both, so go and have fun, friends.
Music for your post-Super Bowl hangover.
Enjoy.
:The
Dodos - Black Night:
I think it's time that I alter my relationship with the
Dodos. In the past they've had a couple of songs that
I've liked and shared, but I never spent much time with any
of their albums. This track, though, is just too well
done for me to continue on such a path, so I definitely have
to pick up No Color when it arrives on March 15 via
Frenchkiss Records.
:Oh
Land - White Winter Hymnal (Fleet Foxes Cover):
I can't help but think that most Fleet Foxes fans have a
strong lack of interest in hearing covers of treasured
tracks like White Winter Hymnal, but even they will
have a tough time denying that Oh Land transformed it into
something that's charming, accessible and really fun to
listen to. I don't think this is on an official
release or anything, so download and save forever.
:Yuck
- Coconut Bible:
I think I'm finally ready to fully jump on the Yuck
bandwagon, and it's all because of this track. I love
that it's very 90s indie rock (perhaps even early Pavement-esque),
but it mainly keeps me coming back for more because of how
catchy it is. Expect the damn thing to be lodged in
your head for a while. Coconut Bible is
actually the b-side for the upcoming Holing Out
single, which is due February 21.
:Tristen
- Baby Drugs:
Like the Yuck song, this has a distinct 90s feel to it.
It's not of the indie rock variety, but you should know
where I'm coming from if you listened to any of the
"alternative" pop tracks that filled the radio during that
time. Also, expect to find yourself humming this long
after it's stopped playing. Charlatans At The
Garden Gate hit store shelves last week via American
Myth Recordings.
:We
Are Losers - Cheerleader:
To be honest, there isn't much to this track. It's
barely two and half minutes, there's a lot of repeato lyrics
and it's got a very simple sound. Still, it's sugary
sweet and very easy to sort of get wrapped up in before you
realize it's already played through a dozen times.
This seems to be a one-off effort, but the band does have an
EP available for
FREE. Get it.
