For the sake of not having to write the same intro a million different ways throughout the rest of time, just know that this column avoids the overly long and sometimes dull process of full film reviews and instead opts to break things down based on what I thought going in, what happened while I was there and what I learned at the end of it all.  Hope that's OK.

Read on!

The Breakdown - Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark

The Impression:

It's August (a usual dump month for studios) and Guillermo del Toro's name seems to be bigger on the poster than the actual title of the movie, but I'm in to at least check it out.

The Reality:

As it turns out, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark is a really nice movie.  I wouldn't say it does anything particularly special - the wicked little CG creatures are hit or miss, the three main actors (Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes, Bailee Madison) are okay, and there's just enough clever moments to somewhat mask the various lapses in logic that plague the script.  Still though, it's a fun ride that's well made, which is certainly something that's difficult to say about big-studio horror flicks these days.

The Lesson:

Del Toro is pretty good about picking projects to put his name on.  Now if only he could be quicker about getting some of his own stuff made.
