I had planned
to write about this weekend’s
Austin Psych Fest, but I assume everyone
is already in the know about that. If not, just be sure to
check out
Shapes Have Fangs on Friday or
Roky Erickson on Sunday night, and you
should be fine. Now, here's some info on another show
that might be of interest to you.
Saturday night at Antone’s there will be a show to celebrate
the release of Day Is The New Night, which is the
third full length from
Moonlight Towers. The power pop group
doesn’t exactly
break any new ground with their "big chorus & big guitars" approach,
but it’s a tried and true rock tradition that can make for some gems. I personally prefer when
they leave the pretty melodies and heartache aside and crank
up the guitar amps. Tracks such as
Heat Lightning show they can be as rowdy and raucous as the
best bar bands. Another thing I love is how they mix in just
the right about of keyboards and perfectly timed horns. It’s
amazing how a little trumpet can make all the difference in
a song.
Fun Fact about
Moonlight Towers: The band is named after the tall vintage
streetlights found in Austin. The towers were made famous in
the 1993 film Dazed And Confused ("Party at the Moon
Tower!").
Also, opening up for Moonlight Towers on Saturday are two of my
favorite local bands:
Grand Champeen and
Leatherbag. If you’re not up on both of
these bands, I highly suggest you get yourself to Antone’s
and discover what you’ve been missing.
