Today's Quick Mention:  Just a heads up, the "pass" that I had for Fantastic Fest wasn't exactly what I thought it would be.  So, because my schedule just went from 20 movies down to two or three, the usual content will be up in a non-interrupted manner..  See you all tonight at La Zona Rosa for Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings.

Weird week.  Let's bring it to a good close.  Enjoy.

:White Denim - Home Together:  In what was easily the only good surprise I received all week, this local trio suddenly announced that they had a wonderfully free collection of tracks for the world to consume.  I haven't listened to all of them just yet, but I noticed this one posted up elsewhere and I really liked its rather accessible pop sound.  Download Last Day Of Summer here.

:The Octopus Project - Fuguefat:  Oddly enough, here's another local act that decided to release some new music this week.  I've always used words like quirky, pop and experimental to describe what they do, but this track makes it seem as though they've now wrangled "intense" into the fray of things.  I dig it.  Hexadecagon is due October 26 on Peek-A-Boo.  My money is on it being stellar.

:Laura Veirs And Mount Analog - The Ocean (Led Zeppelin Cover):  This features such a bizarre combination of things that I have no problem saying that I fully expected to not like it.  Wrong!  This is version is not only really fun, but it actually rocks.  A big covers comp called The Land Of Ice And Snow: The Songs Of Led Zeppelin is set to be released October 9 on Jealous Butcher.

:The Soft Pack - Gagdad:  I've only ever shared a couple of super jangly singles from this band, so to hear them doing something cool and slow is a bit weird.  Do they have other tracks like this?  If so, send them over!  Gagdad is a tour exclusive 7", which you will actually be able to pick up (if there are any of the 500 copies left) when the band plays Antone's on October 9.

:Suuns - Up Past The Nursery:  To be honest, it took me a long while to decide whether or not I actually liked this song.  The semi-mumbling/whispered vocals are an odd touch ... but there's also something very entrancing about its pulsing beat.  Let me know what you think.  Zeroes QC is due October 12 on Secretly Canadian, and they will be at the Parish three days after that with Land Of Talk.
