I first learned about The Drums from a promotional email, where I took one look at their photos and thought, "I’m totally going to despise this band."  In fact, I was actually tempted to send their picture in to Look At This Fucking Hipster.

Then I listened the song being promoted - fully expecting to hate it, of course.  But I ended up loving it.  People everywhere often say "Don’t judge!" and I certainly shouldn’t have in this case.  Sure, the guys in the band look like they're out of a hipster catalogue, but who really cares?  I know I don’t, especially considering they’ve released one of my favorite pop albums of the year.  It combines the finely crafted, professional songwriting of the 1950’s with the post-punk and electronic music of the ‘80s.  It’s an unlikely pairing of musical influences, really, but both eras did feature music that spoke directly to teenagers, communicating their thoughts, dreams, and feelings in a simple and clear-cut language, so there is a sort of natural connection.  The Drums' self titled debut is a great one.  Pick it up!

You can check out the band in person when they perform with The Young Friends this Saturday, September 25th at ND.  Get their early because a sell-out is likely.
