Today's Quick Mention: Just a heads up,
I'm taking the long holiday weekend to do a whole
lot of relaxing, so don't expect to see any content
until Tuesday. If you decide to seek out
another website for entertainment, remember to surf
safely.
Time to get the party started. Or whatever.
Enjoy.
:Maximum
Balloon - Absence Of Light (Featuring Tunde Adebimpe):
David Sitek is consistently awesome, but until this track
fell in my lap I was seriously wondering if I was going to
ever hear anything good from Maximum Balloon. Putting
Tunde (TV On The Radio) on vocals was a good idea, but I
think my favorite part is the weird, brooding and dancey
arrangement. I should seek out the currently available
self titled debut.
:Darlings
- Don't Be So Hard On Yourself:
This is such a rollicking little pop number. I love
the all fun approach that they take with it sound-wise and
the boy/girl vocal combo, despite being done a zillion times
over, actually sounds refreshing here. You should
crank the volume on this while you give it a listen.
Famous Class Records will release the Warma EP on
September 28.
:Bad
Books - You Wouldn't Have To Ask:
Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine aren't names I
normally get overly excited about, so I wasn't too
interested when I received a press release saying they had
joined together to form Bad Books. Still, I gave them
a shot and actually ended up pleasantly surprised.
This is a rather short track, but it's a solid piece of
indie rock. The band's self titled debut is due out
October 19.
:Atmosphere
- Freefallin':
I like this. I think. Actually, I'm not entirely
sure how I feel, but I'm sharing it with you anyway. I
expect you'll dig the super chill sounds that slink along in
the background ... it's just a matter of figuring out if the
"bright side" lyrics are noteworthy or cheesy. The duo
have a new double EP due September 7 on Rhymesayers.
It's titled To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade
Holy: The Atmosphere EPs.
:The
Raveonettes - I Wanna Be Adored (Stone Roses Cover):
The original version of this is a pretty cool song, but I
have to give it up to Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo for
stepping things up a bit. Their take is much louder
and hazier. Maybe it's time for them to churn out a
covers record? Could be neat. Anyhow, this track
came from the Dr. Martens
site, where you can also find a video.
