Today's Quick Mention: Jonsi, Mountain
Man, Ra Ra Riot, The Fresh And Onlys, Cloud
Nothings, Minus The Bear, Tim Kasher, Interpol,
White Rabbits, We Are Scientists, Ghostland
Observatory - can you believe that all of these acts
are playing here in town between now and when the
Austin Film Festival wraps on Thursday? Too
bad I'm determined to see so many movies.
Check out
Showlist Austin
if you don't have any plans and need a show or five
to attend.
Five tracks to improve your day. Enjoy.
:The
Duke Spirit - Everybody's Under Your Spell:
This band is definitely one that I prefer live over actual
recordings, but you're not venturing out of the house to see
them without previously hearing some music, so here's a new
track. It's pretty good (although, I do wish it was a
little 'dirtier'). Just be sure to turn it up really
loud and strike at least one solid rock pose. The
Kusama EP is due out in December on iTunes.
:Secret
Knives - The Northwest States:
Because so many blogs use it as lazy content (and in turn it
jacks up the Elbo.ws charts), I tend to hate the Music
Alliance Pact. However, on occasion, it does ease my
storm by delivering an interesting act like Secret Knives.
Essentially a bedroom project by Over The Atlantic's Ash
Smith, this is some good shoegaze. Affection is
the name of his album, and it's currently available for
free.
:The
Narcoleptic Dancers - Not Evident:
Just looking for something that will get lodged in your head
for the next day or so? Then this pop gem from Anton
Louis Jr. and Melody Van Kappers should do the trick.
Actually, this is incredibly catchy, so be warned that
you're probably getting more hook than you're asking for.
A debut EP from the oddly named duo is due out at some point
in the (probably/hopefully near) future.
:TV
Girl - If You Want It:
I stumbled across this at Pitchfork over the weekend and
ended up digging it a lot. It's a rather accessible
track with just enough haze that you'll probably have a
moment or two where you'll miss those days spent by the pool
in the middle of the summer. There's currently a self
titled EP that is available for the pretty sexy price of
free. You should get it.
:Ravens
And Chimes - Division Street:
Admittedly, I kind of forgot about this act. They had
a couple of really nice tracks a few years back, and then
that was the last I heard of them until this past week.
Not much seems to have changed, but that's not a bad thing
... especially if you like your indie pop crafted in an
eloquent manner. A new LP is expected sometime next
year.
