Today's Quick Mention: My elaborate
plans for Fantastic Fest and ACL didn't exactly come
into fruition, so none our content ended up being
shifted or delayed. However, the third time's
a charm, and there's a good chance that my 18-film
schedule for the Austin Film Festival, which starts
on Thursday, could jack up some of the
reading/listening material around these parts.
We'll see. Sorry if it does.
It's Monday! Let's not celebrate that fact. Enjoy.
:The
Ting Tings - We're Not The Same:
While I liked Hands, I know there were quite a few
people who found the first single off the new album to be a
bit bland and too house music-esque. Fortunately for
all of them, this sounds like a more high octane take on the
slick pop tunes that made their debut such a hit.
Ralph Lauren has been using this as a special download, but
I expect it to be on their sophomore LP next year.
:My
Dry Wet Mess - Etcetera:
Not sure why, but last week my inbox yielded a ton of
instrumental music. The best of the bunch, as far as I
could tell when I browsed it all yesterday, was My Dry Wet
Mess. If you like electronic wizardry and rays of
sunshine then this should brighten up your day a
considerable amount. Irrational Alphabet is due
out October 26 on Magical Properties.
:Kisses
- Kisses:
Despite obviously lacking some creativity in the
naming-things department, this act has a very nice sound
that's easy on the ears. Actually, it's also easy on
the hips, because you'll want to do dance, but this slinky
tune will allow you to do so in a relaxed fashion. The
Heart Of The Nightlife is set to be released November 16
on This Is Music.
:Doctors
And Dealers - Trouble:
I've grown very accustomed to Doctors And Dealers delivering
quality pieces of Swedish pop over the years, so to hear
them slide away from that and take on a more theatrical
style is definitely a little strange. On the bright
side, I still think the music is great. Just
different. The Trouble EP is due December 10 on
Blue Song Records.
:Freelance
Whales - Enzymes:
Just when I thought these guys only made simplistic indie
pop, they come from nowhere and release this wall of sound.
It's pretty good, and now I'll have to try and decide if I
like Freelance Whales when they're catchy or when they're
loud. Weathervanes is currently available on
Frenchkiss. I still need to pick it up.
