I abandoned you
two weeks ago. I’m sorry. Can you ever forgive me? I
wouldn’t typically give a nightgown as a compensatory gift,
but these are the Nightgowns. As far as your ears are
concerned, these guys are a great auditory present that
won’t make you feel bad about re-gifting. The Nightgowns are
a four-piece hailing from Tacoma, Washington. That’s right;
these guys are American.
Coming in with the distinction of being my first* decidedly
more domestic share here on Side One, the Nightgowns bear a
character fitting of the experimental nature of the artist
community in the northwestern pocket and carry a sound
that’s diverse yet defined. While jovial, jangly summer rock
tracks like Buoy grace their discography, it’s tracks
like Narwhal Aerobics that really come to define the
Nightgowns - or at least their '09 release, Sing
Something - for me. Mopey, lucid vocals set to a moody
track built with cheap little drum machine sounds and thick,
warbly synths give an instant ‘80s throwback sound that’s
reinforced with a thoughtful, modern perspective.
Deceivingly minimal, their simple tracks are engaging,
well-built and warrant multiple plays.
*Well that’s a lie. I posted on Telekinesis sometime ago.
When he’s not sleeping or being lazy, Brad writes
and creates for Both Sides of the Mouth. If
you’d like to reach him regarding his writings here
on Side One: Track One, feel free to contact him
here.
