Last week Austin’s White Denim, a band I’ve had a man crush on since moving here, surprised everyone with a free downloadable album (although you can make a donation to support their upcoming tour).  Last Day Of Summer was casually recorded while they were in the studio for their official third album, and it's a collection of songs "that have been bouncing around since the formation of the band back in ‘06."  So, if you’ve been to a few of their live shows you’ll undoubtedly recognize a few tracks.

Musically, Last Day Of Summer is expansive and even a little risky.  Some songs are twangy and ramshackle, two are instrumentals, and a few even have a rather surprising smooth jazz vibe.  You’ll also find a couple unhinged psychedelic rock tunes that White Denim is most known for.  Added all together, the collection makes for an eclectic and thoroughly enjoyable mix.  I’m an unapologetic White Denim fan and this album justifies my love (Boom! Madonna reference!) for them.  This record isn’t a frenetic all-out rock jam like past releases.  It’s quieter and more thoughtful, and it’s a testament to the band’s growth and dedication to expanding their sound while also being more accessible.
