John caught me
being a sneaky bastard two weeks ago when I may have
regurged one of my older posts here on Side One Track One.
It was enough to make me feel bad and make sure whoever I
chose for this week was really special. That said, before I
say any more, why don’t you just go ahead and let that first
track start up. Yes. Now, at this point, the keys should
have started up, and I feel like it’s a moment of 'nuff
said, but if you insist that I share more ...
This, my dear friends, are The Courteeners. Though I admit
the fact that these guys aren’t really game-changers in
terms of British rock, it has to be said that the sound they
deliver is absolutely superb. Now if you know me well
enough, you know that they already had me at "British," but
it’s more than that here. The Courteeners are sons of
Manchester, and it’s a bit different up there in the North.
Said to be tougher and thicker-skinned, you’re not going to
get that whiney pop that you might find in the London
boroughs. This is grittier and ought to be a cheap affair,
but there’s a prevalent theatric sound backing it all -
simple spoken vocals and short, plain riffs are buffered by
heavy drums and sweeping strings. With this gruff demeanor
playing to such a big sound, the Courteeners lend way to a
darker tone of pop. It’s got a f*ck all demeanor that
doesn’t really care about you, but it retains just enough
pop aspects to still make it attractive and approachable.
It’s a dirty seduction is what that is.
