Are you ready for FunFunFun Fest?! If you haven’t been to this incredible festival yet, do yourself a favor and pony up the cash for tickets. Considering all the excellent bands on the bill, tickets are a steal at twice the price. Plus, the weather is looking absolutely perfect this weekend, so get your ass out to Waterloo Park.
While I’m eager for the festival to begin, I’m not here to
write about those bands. Instead I want to make a couple
record recommendations. The first is Fission by Film
School. I’ve enjoyed the past releases by the band but this
album is definitely my favorite. It’s chock full of dynamic
pop songs that will keep you grooving. It also has an
amazing diversity of sound while still maintaining the best
aspects of what they’ve done in the past. Some critics have
knocked the band for diverging so far from their signature
style but I love the wider range of songs. In fact, I think
it’s the best quality of the record. It’s why I find myself
listening to it over and over and over. If you’re a sucker
for good pop music than you need to check this record out. I
could really see Film School having the same crossover and
radio appeal as bands like Metric and Frightened Rabbit.
My other recommendation is a band best known for their song
How You Like Me Now?, an infectious tune that was featured
in a popular Kia commercial. That killer track by The Heavy
is now regularly heard at on TV shows, the radio, and
sporting events. The band recently released an EP with the
same name as their big hit. Fortunately, the group is not a
one trick pony. The other tracks on the EP also pack a punch
and are suitable for any bumping house party. The group
mixes neo soul with plenty of guitar rock while sprinkling
in some funky horns. Add in a singer with the vocal delivery
of James Brown and you have a winning formula.
