Is everyone excited for Memorial Day Weekend?  Are you heading out of town or sticking around for the mayhem that is the Chaos In Tejas festival?  It’s a busy weekend for me but I’m going to take in at least a few shows.

At the top of my "must see" list is The Marked Men, a punk band out of Denton that crafts quick hitting jams with a surprising pop sheen. But don’t mistake these guys with some shitty power pop/punk band out of Southern California (I’m looking at you Blink-182).  With songs like Too Pretty Too Fuck, Whip Myself and Sadist, this isn’t your parents punk band.  Of course, the tunes aren’t nearly as dark as the song titles might suggest.  Listen to almost any of their records and you’ll instantly latch on to the big hooks, snappy lyrics, and furious rock.  Check out these tracks from their Ghost album, which was released in January of 2009:

The Marked Men - A Little Time

While I’m talking about The Marked Men, I have to give props to the Side One: Track One podcast for introducing me to Mind Spiders.  The band is a solo project of Mark Ryan from The Marked Men. I instantly loved the garage pop goodness of World’s Destroyed when I heard it on the podcast.  If you’re a fan of Jay Reatard or Kurt Vile (and why wouldn’t you be?), I suggest you down the new Mind Spiders EP pronto.

You can see Mind Spiders perform at Trailer Space Records on Saturday afternoon while The Marked Men headline Beerland on Sunday night.  Enjoy the festival!
