For the
sake of not having to write the same intro a million
different ways throughout the rest of time, just know that
this column avoids the overly long and sometimes dull
process of full film reviews and instead opts to break
things down based on what I thought going in, what happened
while I was there and what I learned at the end of it all.
Thanks for reading!
The
Breakdown - Our Family Wedding
The Impression:
I'm always shocked that film's like these, rehashes of
remakes of rehashes of reboots, get made with legitimate
actors (actor?) just bristling with horrendous stereotypes.
But they do, and as I'm a film critic, I'm lucky enough to
attend them.
The Reality:
Near the end of every film that treads these tired, tired
treads I hope, beyond hopes, that a drastic event will
occur. Perhaps anxious, slightly OCD father-figure Brad
Boyd (Forest Whitaker) will turn his emotions in to violent
rage, spattering his boisterous wedding guests with
low-grade buckshot. Or maybe mixed race lovers Lucia
Ramirez (America Ferrera) and Marcus Boyd (Lance Gross) will
die in a fiery car crash leaving their family bereaved and
without the capability of spouting low-brow race humor.
Sadly, predictably, it doesn't. Our Family's Wedding
putters along, firmly fated to coast along the track of
expectation.
Not only an unenjoyable film, but an offensive one.
The Lesson:
Must be hard times in the Whitaker house, what with this and
Repo Man slumming it in to theaters this month. Wait
it out Forrest, things will perk up!
